Title: Statewide Courier Service
Narrative: GPLS provided courier services to each of the 60 Georgia public library system headquarters locations five days a week. The number of holds and transits for materials was reduced by nearly half with a total of 1,216,408 during the year. This was due to budgetary constraints exceeded by success of the service and the USG/GIL libraries no longer using the same courier service as public libraries. The growing number of holds and transits surpassed the agency’s ability to stay within its annual budget (LSTA and state) requiring the PINES team to adjust the parameters for holds for cost savings. The increase in GPLS’ courier service to public libraries beyond budget despite maximizing efficiency of transits clearly demonstrates the need for additional funding allocation based on use. Additionally, the public libraries were no longer able to courier interlibrary loans to and from University System of Georgia libraries without any direct cost for postage/shipping.

Title: PINES Student Card (PLAY)
Narrative: The PINES Student Card (PLAY) program provided students with access to both physical and digital materials, such as eRead Kids and GALILEO databases. Students were able to check out as many as five items at a time with no late fees. They were allowed to request items from any PINES member library with free delivery to their local library of choice for pickup. PLAY was developed by GPLS to give youth more access to public library resources and tools needed to build literacy skills. While the program is a statewide initiative, individual libraries and school systems forged local agreements for how to implement the PLAY card in their community. During the year, there were 101,025 cards issued to students and 125,412 items were checked out.

Title: eCard and eRenew Service
Narrative: PINES added eCard registration as an option in early 2020 to allow patrons to use the library while facilities were closed during the COVID 19 pandemic. GPLS purchased a consortia subscription for the PINES member libraries as well as three other non-PINES systems who opted to use this product. PINES also added the eRenew product for easy online library card renewals in mid-2023. For this year, 35,900 patrons registered online, a 26 percent increase from the previous year. Of those, 3,408 upgraded their eCard to full accounts after registration. Since implementation 23,753 patrons renewed their cards online, an 80 percent increase from the previous year. All numbers stated herein are for PINES libraries only.
