Title: The Music Garden at Sunrise Mountain Library
State Project Code: 2023-0260-14
Start Date: 05/12/2023
End Date: 09/06/2024
Abstract: The goal of the project was to expand the community’s knowledge of basic music concepts and literacy skills by providing a music space on the children’s patio at the Sunrise Mountain Library. Funds were used to purchase the musical instruments that were placed on the children's patio. Community members benefited because parents/caregivers were able to interact with their children as their first teachers in an environment that showed them what can be expressed and achieved through music.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
95% of participants expressed that they were satisfied with the addition of the Music Garden to the youth patio. 80% of participants attended a Spring into Storytime program in the Music Garden and expressed interest in attending a Fall into Storytime program as well. Various young children also verbally expressed their fondness for the addition of the Music Garden to the library’s outdoor space. The instruments are utilized by the community on a daily basis, even during the summer heat.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
The feedback that the library received let staff know that the Music Garden has been a wonderful addition to the library. Library staff members were able to witness firsthand the positive effects of taking storytime outside in the Music Garden. This new storytime allowed for a fun way to engage with the instruments while also adding a unique interactive component to storytime. Due to the popularity of storytime outside in the garden, the librarians have decided to continue to hold this program during the cooler weather months with the hope of reaching new families.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
For those that are wanting to add their own Music Garden, it is important to think about the height and placement of the instruments that one would select. Additionally, if one chooses to add music instruments, they should keep in mind the many ways that the instruments will be used or mistreated. To address this, it's advised to include signage to let the public know the rules for safe usage.
