Abstract: The Washington State Library was one of the original members of SLAAIT. The State Libraries and AI Technologies (SLAAIT) Working Group is a collaborative initiative involving 17 state libraries, established to explore the opportunities, challenges, and risks associated with integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the library sector. This project’s aim is to equip state library agencies to respond effectively to the evolving AI landscape. SLAAIT offered resources such as briefings on key AI issues, a knowledge base with training materials and policy guidance, and an "AI Petting Zoo" that allows participants to experiment with AI tools in collaborative sessions.

Participation in SLAAIT provided SLAA staff with education and understanding around artificial intelligence (AI) and libraries, discuss benefits and downsides to this new technology, and get hands-on experience with current AI tools. One big outcome to this project is that it dovetailed nicely with the work of the California State Library, which recently was invited to submit a full application for an IMLS Laura Bush Grant, which the Washington State Library is partnering on.

Having a firm grasp on AI and libraries allows the WA SLAA to be a valuable resource for interested libraries around the state.

This is a fast moving field that is hard to keep current on, but this project has allowed the WA SLAA to have a leadership role around AI and libraries in the state.
