Abstract: The project aimed to enhance the specific gaps in the Ely Shoshone Tribe Library’s services and resources. We recognized the resource shortage that is hindering our ability to effectively serve our diverse patrons. This shortage was manifested in limited culturally important services, dearth of culturally relevant literature, and insufficient staffing. The library had restricted offerings and had inadequate technology, such as computers and printers, which were crucial for vital activities like employment searches, educational research and skill development. To bridge the identified gaps, the project adopted the following approaches: 1) educate patrons about the tribe’s cultural heritage, history and traditions 2) acquire a new collection of books focused on Native American history and culture 3) procure modern technological resources like computers and printers. To reintroduce the library to its patrons and increase interest, the project manager collaborated with other tribal project managers in holding activities within the vicinity of the library and using the newly acquired book collections. On top of the regular pre-school class where a native teacher conducts cultural classes, after-school activities were held in the vicinity where the cultural books were utilized. Specifically, a cultural camp was held inside the building where the library is located. During the activity, the following classes were held: native dancing, drum making and Indian taco preparation. To cap it off, the participants were treated to a bed time story telling using one of the newly purchased cultural books.

Title: Preschool Cultural Heritage Classes
Narrative: For the pre- school kids, a total of 15 cultural related classes were held. The lesson was on dream catchers, teepees and cradleboard. The average length of each class was 20 minutes each day and ran for five days. The class included discussion and hands on activity.

Title: Fandango and Powwow Beadwork Classes
Narrative: One cultural class was held during the Fandango and Powwow. It showcased beadwork. It was held on a Saturday at 10:30 am to 12:00 noon. The Library had an open house. Registered guests were 48 kids. The parents that went with them were not counted. The Beadwork class was partly funded by the White Pine County Tourism Board.

Title: Cultural Camp
Narrative: During the cultural camp, the following were shared with the participants: dancing (Jingle and Grass), bedtime stories, drum making and Indian Taco preparation. This was an overnight activity. Activities were held from 3:30 pm, Friday to 9:30 am, Saturday. Cultural camp had 14 participants (12 ages 7-12 and 2 ages13-17) as per parental permission slips

Title: Cultural Heritage Collection
Narrative: The libray purchased a total of 41 books. Breakdown as follows: 20 non-fiction; 5 for ages 12 and below; 15 for over 12 years old 21 fiction; 12 for ages 12 and below; 9 for over 12 years old The focus of these books is on Native American history in general and Shoshone history in particular. These books were chosen to deepen our community’s understanding and appreciation of their heritage. These will serve as foundational resources for our educational programs and presentations. These resources, in a way, transformed our Library into a vibrant cultural center where the community can come together to learn, celebrate and preserve their heritage.

The project sparked interest in the Library and the Shoshone culture. It served as an avenue to promote tribal history and traditions especially to the younger generations. Having activities in the vicinity of the Library was an opportunity to introduce the Library, love of books and reading, as well as the Shoshone cultural heritage. A cultural teaching class is regularly held at the pre-school. The kids were introduced to dreamcatchers, cradleboards and teepees. The new collection of books was introduced via the cultural camp that was held. At the cultural camp, the participants learned dancing, drum making and Indian taco preparation. The aim was to impart to the youth their cultural heritage and let them tell their parents about their experiences and the changes in the Library. The result was a renewed interest in the Library and the Shoshone culture.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
This is just the start of a grand plan to make the Library an option for Shoshone children to spend time. The Library is just a small part of a bigger facility that the Tribe plans to provide its youth. Learning extends beyond the classroom. This project shows that education can be achieved through non-traditional methods, making learning engaging and fun. While advanced technology and digital learning weren't fully utilized here, this could be the beginning of that shift. Creativity is key to keeping the current generation engaged, and technology plays a big role in that. A reading nook with a native feel was created for kids to read or socialize. The Shoshone Language is slowly being reintroduced, and more resources on it should be added to the library. This project created opportunities to further promote Shoshone heritage. While cultural activities don't have to be confined to the Library, it can be a central resource. Although extended hours for the Library didn't happen, it's still a goal for the future.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The library’s aesthetics were changed to have a more native look and feel. The purpose was to instill pride in one’s cultural heritage and a sense of belonging. The makeover sparked interest in the library as word spread about the change. Understanding Shoshone heritage is more than just learning history; it strengthens community bonds. This project sparked interest in the past, helping the younger generation appreciate their roots. Activities that involve both youth and elders are essential and will continue to be a focus for the Tribe. While hiring a cultural advocate didn't happen, the Library staff worked with other projects and invited Shoshone elders to share their cultural knowledge. A part-time Shoshone teacher also led cultural classes for preschoolers.
