Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Tribal libraries are resilient and committed to providing information resources to their communities.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
LSTA funding is critical to providing services and one-on-one training to tribal librarians and their communities. Unlike most public libraries, tribal communities do not generate local taxes to help support local community services. The resources purchased through this project for the tribal libraries, in some circumstances, are the only items purchased for their library. Understanding the unique challenges tribal librarians face helps facilitate the consulting process. Tribal librarians have expressed the importance of relationship building and developing trust when working with non-tribal entities. This can be best achieved by providing face-to-face consultation services. LSTA funds allow dedicated consultation to tribal libraries and comprehensive State Library agency-wide support for tribal communities.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Tribal libraries are committed to providing library services in their communities. Navigating the complex federal, state and local jurisdictional requirements to provide information resources to their community shows the resolve and dedication of these library information professionals. To be successful in supporting tribal libraries and communities, SLAAs must make an agency-wide commitment to coordinate all their departments and resources (E-rate, Archives, Library Services, etc.) to make a purposeful and meaningful impact on serving tribal communities.
