Title: Original Cataloging of Indigenous Materials at the Arizona State Museum

Abstract: The project aimed to expand access to materials related to Indigenous peoples of the Southwest and northwestern Mexico. Funds were used to hire a part-time cataloger to address a backlog of original cataloging, update subject headings, and improve name authority work. Community members benefited because important historical materials at the Arizona State Museum Library & Archives are now accessible online through the catalog. One positive result is the increased discoverability of unique Indigenous materials, improving access for researchers and communities. Additionally, harmful and outdated terms have been replaced, fostering better relationships with Native American communities.

The Arizona State Museum created 1,168 original catalog records, migrated approximately 38,000 records to a new catalog, and weeded about 500 out of scope and duplicate items from the backlog.

Many libraries no longer have staff who are proficient in original cataloging. This project underscores the importance of bringing staff on board who can handle the work.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
One of the interesting outcomes of the project was discovering that many titles placed in the original cataloging backlog, which accumulated over the course of decades, were discovered to have copy catalog records available. It is important to address original cataloging backlogs in real time, but there was a small benefit in putting titles aside and waiting.
