General Information
Title: Create! Interactive Programs for the Developmentally Disabled
State Project Code: LS-I-23-15
Start Date: 07/01/2023
End Date: 09/30/2024
Abstract: Yorba Linda Public Library created a series of programs and supplemental services to support adults with developmental disabilities. Programs included crafting activities, where participants created items using their artistry and critical thinking skills, a series of book discussions, and a reading incentive program in collaboration with the local nonprofit organization My Day Counts. The library acquired print and digital books and text-to-read pens to expand the resources available at the library for community members with disabilities. The programs helped participants feel more confident and welcome at the library, led to reduced stress levels when interacting in a public setting, increased cognitive and fine motor-skills, created a stronger sense of community, and increased awareness of library services. By offering more resources for adults with developmental disabilities, the library increased equity of access to materials and worked toward strengthening the culture of inclusion and belonging at the library.
State Goal: Goal 1: Strengthen the ability of California libraries to design programs and services for all Californians in collaboration with their local communities

Title: Circulating Materials
Narrative: The library purchased a total of 375 print books, 224 digital books, and two reader pens for the circulating collection. The digital items were selected in a purchase-to-own format through the Overdrive platform. The print books circulated 1,048 times, the digital materials circulated 657 times, and the reader pens circulated three times. The purchases helped library staff expand access to information and library resources for adults experiencing developmental disabilities. In particular, the library expanded access to popular materials that served users’ literacy needs. The purchases also helped library staff create a more inclusive library environment.
Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Title: Acquisition of Materials
Narrative: The Yorba Linda Public Library acquired 375 print books, 224 eBooks, and two text-to-speech pens for its circulating collection to support the programs and services developed for adult library users experiencing developmental disabilities. Purchases included materials of interest to users and appropriate to their reading levels. The library also purchased supplies to support a series of programs for developmentally disabled adults. These included supplies for programs that featured 30 different types of crafts and contents for 5 craft kits. In addition, library staff selected and acquired 36 books to support the project's book discussion programs and 30 sensory toys for participants to use as an additional educational outlet during programs. Book discussion programs encouraged reading and helped participants engage with the purchased books, and a reading incentive program promoted literacy in a fun and engaging manner.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The library will continue offering monthly programs to adults with developmental disabilities. This will include a monthly "drop-in" Create! Craft Program, as well as a continued collaboration with the organization My Day Counts to offer monthly book discussions and crafts for group members.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
The library is working to determine if programming for children with developmental disabilities will be a project to accomplish in the future.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Libraries wishing to implement a similar project should attempt to work with groups who already frequent the library and/or reach out to local groups working with adults experiencing developmental disabilities. The Yorba Linda Public Library found success by engaging with groups who visited the library on a weekly basis and getting their input as the library worked to expand access to resources.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
Yes
Explain:
The library will offer monthly Create! Craft Programs for adults, as opposed to weekly events, due to staffing limitations.
Do you anticipate changing the types of activities and objectives addressed by the project:
No
Explain:
