General Information
Title: MoVal Gamers Lair
State Project Code: LS-LC-23-03
Start Date: 07/01/2023
End Date: 09/30/2024
Abstract: The MoVal Gamers' Lair project created a technology center at the Moreno Valley Mall Branch Library which introduced community members, and particularly young people, to emerging technologies through hands-on activities. The project included a weekly Discovery Club and a weekly Game On! program, both of which provided opportunities for kids and teens to design their own games, learn to code, practice and compete in eSports, and develop graphic design and other technical skills that they can apply in their futures. The center's gaming core provided participants with a safe space to interact in the gaming and technology world, while purchases like a hydroponic garden, 3D printers, robotics equipment, Legos, and more, allowed library patrons of all ages the chance to engage with different technologies. The MoVal Gamers' Lair project also employed two student interns who gained work experience through the grant.
State Goal: Goal 1: Strengthen the ability of California libraries to design programs and services for all Californians in collaboration with their local communities

Title: Acquisition of Program Supplies and Materials
Narrative: Library staff purchased computing technology, educational board games, and technology for creating to support and deliver the programming offered through the MoVal Gamer's Lair at the Moreno Valley Public Library Mall Branch. Staff used the supplies to deliver community centered programming for youth that met project goals, including hands on opportunities with digital technologies, coding, and e-sports competitions. Items were available for weekly programming participants to use in the library and also made available via circulation. These items have seen daily use by the target audience and have played a vital role in making the library a more welcoming space for youth.
Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Title: Discovery Club
Narrative: Library staff presented a variety of STEAM-based programming. A weekly Discovery Club helped expose school age kids to hands-on activities involving science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Each week staff provided participants with supplies and walked them through the activities or supported them in exploring the different educational experiences on their own. A Lego club allowed kids to engineer their own creations. Other programs included a solar eclipse program, an engineering program using recycled materials, and a program exploring math through educational games. The Discovery Club programming received positive feedback from patrons who expressed excitement for the programs.
Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Title: GameOn!
Narrative: The GameOn! program brought teens and young adults into the Moreno Valley Public Library Mall branch to engage in programming in a safe place. Programming incorporated gaming computers, educational board and tabletop games, virtual reality, and more. Library staff created a manual outlining steps necessary for participants to learn different aspects of game creation including story writing, coding, and music creation. GameOn! participants were able to interact with the gaming community in a safe environment while gaining exposure to the tools and resources necessary to start creating their own games.
Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The library hired two temporary interns to help set up the technology equipment, create manuals for patron use, and program proposals for ideas for events the library could add. The library hired one of the interns as a full-time library associate to carry on their work with the technology center. The center supported library users in interacting with new technology. The Library Administration will develop a strategic plan for the library's technology centers to improve use, accessibility, and relevance to the community.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Inspired by the selection of new equipment in the technology center, the library's interns created program proposals for Lego Clubs, 3D-printing classes, and role-playing games and tournaments. These proposals will help build the ground work for future programs in all of the library's locations.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
To work with multiple agencies in the creation of a new space in order to deliver programming, it's important to have patience and multiple back-up plans. The library planned to target at-risk teens and young adults as its programming audience. The library being located at the Moreno Valley Mall shopping center posed challenges to achieving this goal due to the shopping center's concerns regarding security and the target population.
