State Project Code: 09550-2430-30
Start Date: 10/01/2023
End Date: 09/30/2024
Abstract: Washington State Library provides in-person and virtual training opportunities for library staff. These trainings are led by nationally recognized library leaders, WSL staff, or invited Washington library workers with special subject matter expertise. The majority of the sessions are recorded and posted on WSL's Niche Academy site for later viewing. These resources for continuing education opportunities have a direct impact on patrons and support the national priorities of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
State Goal: Goal 5. Develop broadly representative library staff and leaders and build capacity among libraries across the state to serve all constituents

Title: Virtual trainings
Narrative: The Training Consultant arranges a variety of training opportunities so Washington library staff can select the options that work best for their needs. Most of the webinars offered through this program include a recording for posting on Niche Academy, and those videos have consistently been well-used. This year this activity also included a special monthly webinar series exclusively for trustees, with a focus on familiarizing board members with their legal and ethical responsibilities and providing tools for effective board service. Synchronous attendance at the monthly First Tuesday webinars was lower this year than in previous years, so it went on a brief hiatus in March 2024. The long-time Training Consultant retired in May 2024 and a new project manager was hired in August, so this activity will evolve going forward.
Intent: Improve the library workforce.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
This reporting period saw an increased demand for support for library boards, so Trustee Training was implemented. Facilitated by the State Librarian, this series sought to educate new and seasoned board members on their responsibilities, applicable laws, and procedural best practices, as well as provide tools for building effective relationships with directors and serving their communities.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Library boards are playing an increasingly visible role in the library field, and it's important that members are prepared to be effective stewards of public funds and trust.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Trustees come to the role with varying levels of experience, commitment, and preparation for board service. Training provides a strong foundation for all board members to ensure that the board's actions are legal, ethical, and appropriate.
