Title: Facilitating Data-informed Decision Making
State Project Code: 4600417
Start Date: 07/01/2023
End Date: 09/30/2024
Abstract: This project provided access to Gale Analytics and targeted training to a self-selected group of NC public libraries allowing them to pair their Integrated Library System (ILS) data with deep demographic and market segmentation insights that make data actionable. This project also provided access software to administer and streamline the Public Libraries Survey data collection.

Title: Gale Analytics Access & Training
Narrative: Gale Analytics empowers library staff to make data-informed decisions through improved access to data and enhanced analysis tools. Libraries were able to develop maps and other visualizations that overlay these types of segmentation to provide an in-depth view of needs and wants alongside current library engagement and service offerings through four dashboards. During preparation for this project all public libraries were invited to a demonstration of Gale Analytics. The self-identified libraries are geographically and socioeconomically diverse. Twenty-two libraries participated in year one of the project. Many libraries chose to set up multiple accounts for staff. In total seventy-five library staff members actively participated in the project.
Intent: Improve library operations.

Activity Details
Title: LibPAS Subscription and Training
Narrative: LibPAS is the software program used to collect, house, and utilize data for the annual statistical report (Public Libraries Survey), NC Public Library Standards Self-Assessment and SFRF Non-Recurring State Payment Reporting. State Aid supported public libraries have unique logins to report and access data. Libraries are able to run template reports and create custom reports for their or other NC public libraries.
Intent: Improve library operations.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
As with any service, Gale Analytics has several power users and also many libraries that use the service sporadically. Barriers to set-up continue to exist especially for smaller or lower staff libraries. Barriers include time, skill level and the overall data culture of the organization.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Gale Analytics has been discontinued by Gale as of fall 2024. The benefits and drawbacks of this product were taken into account when researching a replacement.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Gale Analytics provides access to robust data sets but significant time is needed to truly understand and make well-informed decisions.Training is a critical component to ensure library staff understand and can interpret the data accurately for decision-making. Additionally, helping staff at participating organizations create a network of colleagues to ask questions share knowledge and ideas through peer users groups and contact lists helps facilitate utilization of the tool.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
No
Explain:

Do you anticipate changing the types of activities and objectives addressed by the project:
Yes
Explain:
Gale Analytics is no longer provided by Gale.
