Abstract: Through the Library Consulting project, the Arkansas State Library (ASL) provides guidance and support for the development of public libraries and library services throughout the state of Arkansas. This project benefits the Arkansas public library community by increasing knowledge, confidence, and expertise in library administration and management. Library Consulting services are designed to foster best practices in the library community and to develop community focused library services. As a result, library staff increase professional competency in both traditional library services and in new and emerging library services.

Title: General Consulting / Site Visits
Narrative: General consulting and site visits provide guidance and support for the development of local public libraries and library services throughout the state of Arkansas. Consultations are conducted by phone, email, and in person as needed. Work under this activity includes: development for library boards of trustees and for public library directors and administrators; provision of resources to support library administration (e.g. The Arkansas Freedom of Information Handbook; Roberts Rules of Order Quick Reference; etc.); ongoing maintenance and oversite of a field question repository for public library directors to exchange knowledge with one another.

Title: Public Library Directors Summit
Narrative: This event was organized for public library directors as a standalone event focused on the nuts and bolts of library directorship. The agenda was designed to foster idea-sharing, facilitate the development of relationships among peers, and deliver detailed information on library administration in the state of Arkansas with expert presenters on local government structure and parliamentary procedure invited to speak.

This year we hosted a Public Library Director Summit under this project based on feedback that Directors need nuts and bolts professional development in library management that is not “leadership” based. We received 19 responses to the question, “Please describe what you found valuable about this event?” Of those nineteen comments, thirteen of them indicated that networking or connecting with other library directors was the most valuable part of the event.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Arkansas does not have an accredited library school. Although anecdotal, the project director’s sense is that the role the state library agency plays in community building within the library profession is particularly important in those states without library schools.
