General Information
Title: Continuing Education for California Libraries 2022-2023
State Project Code: 40-9322
Start Date: 07/01/2022
End Date: 09/30/2023
Abstract: California Libraries Learn (CALL) researched and offered training and leadership development for California library staff. A collaboration of the California Library Association and the California State Library, CALL provided 285 learning events including webinars, courses, workshops, conferences, and cohort-based learning at no cost to learners. In addition to live events, the CALL Academy provided asynchronous access to over 900 self-paced learning modules and referrals to 200 free learning events. Responding to increased staff turnover in public libraries, CALL offered training on basic skills such as supervision and management as well as basic cataloging and reference skills. To meet requests for training on handling difficult interactions, CALL offered interactive online and in-person sessions on managing patron challenges from a trauma-informed lens. Over the course of the grant year CALL focused on providing leadership development for library staff through an intensive cohort model and by offering over 60 learning events as Leadership for All.

Title: CALL Needs Assessment and Evaluation
Narrative: In order to determine priority and relevant topics, California Libraries Learn engaged a consultant who conducted research and wrote a needs assessment for continuing education. The report was based on 483 survey responses, focus groups and interviews and was intended to support the planning for future continuing education offerings. The LSTA evaluations and the survey data from the Needs Assessment reinforced that library staff are currently limited in their time for professional development and that they prefer learning events that are relevant, practical and provide opportunity for immediate application and networking.
Intent: Improve the library workforce.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The LSTA evaluations and the survey data from the Needs Assessment reinforced that library staff are currently limited in their time for professional development. This constraint means they prefer learning events that are relevant, practical and provide opportunity for immediate application and networking. The hybrid delivery of Trauma-Informed Librarianship Skill-Building allowed staff to participate in a variety of formats (virtual, in-person and recorded), was specifically focused to the audience (front-line and administrators), and allowed for networking and peer interaction through the in-person skill building sessions. In response to time limitations, CALL also piloted microlearning formats for other trainings.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
The outcomes show that hybrid delivery of future programing would be most beneficial to library staff. The project would considering offering a variety of formats (virtual, in-person, and recorded) to reach a larger audience.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
A significant lesson learned was that library staff desire professional development and learning events that are relevant, practical and provide opportunity for immediate application and networking.
