Abstract: Washington State Library provides in-person and virtual training opportunities for library staff. These trainings are led by nationally recognized library leaders, WSL staff, or invited Washington library workers with special subject matter expertise. The majority of the sessions are recorded and posted on WSL's Niche Academy site for later viewing. These resources for continuing education opportunities have a direct impact on patrons and support the national priorities of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Activity Details
Title: On-demand training videos and courses
Narrative: The Training Consultant arranges a variety of training opportunities so Washington library staff can select the options that work best for their needs. Most of the webinars offered through this program include a recording for posting on Niche Academy, WSL's online learning portal, which allow people who could not attend during the session time to watch asynchronously at a time that works for them, and lets attendees go back and review sections of the trainings in perpetuity. The Training Consultant has also created smaller academies on specific topics in Niche Academy, including youth services, workforce development, and trustee trainings. This activity includes a monthly First Tuesday webinar about a variety of topics, the most popular of which was called No Holds Barred, about WSL's Institutional Library Services program.

Title: RIPL Workshop
Narrative: A major activity for this reporting period was a statewide Research Institute for Public Libraries workshop, held in-person in Kennewick, WA. Thirty-two attendees from library systems all over the state attended and learned about how to tell their library's story with data, how to improve their survey-writing, and how to ask questions that get to the information their library needs.

After a period of exclusively virtual trainings, this reporting period saw the return of in-person or hybrid events. There is a place for both virtual and in-person training opportunities to serve different types of learners and varying comfort levels with travel and in-person events, and there is now almost an expectation that events will include recordings for later viewing.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
There are benefits and drawbacks to both virtual and in-person trainings, but hybrid requires additional staff, equipment, and expertise.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Negotiating recording and posting in training and webinar contracts can increase their value and extend the reach to more library staff. Presenters who are reluctant to allow recording may agree with restrictions on who can access the recording and how long that access is available. Administrators can manage those restrictions in Niche Academy.
