Narrative: DaybyDayVA is a family literacy calendar featuring a book recommendation, a song, an activity, a video and additional resource links for every day of the year. Grouped by seasons and themes, the entries are intended to provide school readiness activities and behaviors in which caregivers can engage children. This calendar identified events and activities that supported early learning and ensured that children were ready for school and ready to read independently.
Grant monies funded the platform, content acquisition, and support for this website on Wordpress. An outside consultant at Influx provided occasional technical support.

Title: Early Learning by World Book
Narrative: Early Learning, formerly Early World of Learning, World Book Online’s early childhood digital resource, is a child’s first encyclopedia, eBook, and introduction to core early concepts. With read-aloud capabilities across all functions, the 60 stories in “World of Reading” and “Trek’s Travels” tied learning together through videos, games, and printable activities. Twelve stories were available in both Spanish and English, and the worksheets also offered written instructions in Spanish. Classic songs, nursery rhymes, and fairy tales completed the program and were often included in the lesson plan for each story.
Grant monies funded this subscription. Because the subscription was discontinued 6/2/2022, there is limited access to usage statistics.

Title: 1,000 Things Before Kindergarten
Narrative: The Library of Virginia partnered with the Soho Center and public libraries across the state to offer 1,000 Things Before Kindergarten. The project expanded the concept of reading 1,000 books before kindergarten to include STEAM topics and social and emotional behaviors.
Grant monies were used for print materials: reading logs, folders and wall charts as well as to obtain books. The Library of Virginia added Spanish language materials to the inventory. Libraries could request additional materials to sustain their programs.

Title: Dial a Story
Narrative: Dial a Story is a toll-free telephone call (833-690-0646) that accesses recorded stories in English and Spanish. Volunteers read and recorded the stories weekly. The stories included a rotation of recent picture books, fairy tales and folk tales, books highlighting equity, diversity, and inclusion, and classic picture books. This program, which debuted July 14, 2021 and was offered 24/7, presented an analog opportunity for strengthening reading readiness using picture books and telephone technology.
There were 1796 completed calls between October 1, 2021 and September 30, 2022.

Title: Nature Backpacks
Narrative: The Library of Virginia supported informal learning via a collaborative project with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Science Museum of Virginia. The project provided nature-themed backpacks designed to help families, Scout groups, homeschoolers and other groups explore nature and learn science concepts while visiting a Virginia State Park. Backpacks were inventoried and the contents consolidated to provide one uniform backpack for all participants. Funds were expended for new and replacement backpacks, materials and curriculum cards in this ongoing program. Patrons using the Nature Backpacks were able to complete exit surveys, with a QR code survey option.

Narrative: The Youth Services Notes is a monthly newsletter for Virginia public libraries' youth services staff. It was distributed through three listservs to youth services staff and library directors at the 94 public libraries. Upon request, it also was sent to other library agencies and other state agencies.
