Abstract: The goal of this project was to launch the Arizona State Museum's first digital collections platform, migrate existing digital assets into the system, improve legacy descriptions and metadata, improve internal documentation and workflows, and dramatically increase the quantity of unique historical papers available online to researchers. Funds were used to hire a part-time Project Archivist. Community members benefited because they have greatly improved and consolidated access to digital collections, access to newly digitized unique historical materials, and ASM has the capacity to work collaboratively with Native American communities on the Mukurtu platform

Activity Details
Title: Launching a New Digital Collection
Narrative: Using Mukurtu CMS as the digital collection platform, the Project Archivist and Head Librarian customized the site design, decided on content blocks, wrote informative texts, and thoroughly prepared the look and feel of the interface to optimize clear communication. Next, existing digital collections were migrated. Many of the existing projects had edited digital objects and metadata in spreadsheets that were suitable to batch import processes. They worked with museum staff on a comprehensive metadata remediation project to address known problematic terms that have shifted over the past 10-20 years and filled in gaps for projects with too little descriptive information.

The launch of the new digital platform at https://asmla.org was a huge success. Since launching the website in October, 2022 the site has attracted 1,469 unique visitors and received 514,403 page views.

Now that the Arizona State Museum has stable digital platform that is up and running, Library and Archives staff can support the creation of additional digital collections using existing staffing or with assistance from volunteers or student interns.
