Title: Mindy McGinnis Gateway Author Presentation
Narrative: McGinnis began by speaking about her inspiration for her novel The Initial Insult, and how her experience in high school reading Edgar Allan Poe's stories inspired her as a reader and a writer. She used this discussion as a springboard to talk to students about becoming a writer, emphasizing that anyone can become a writer by working hard and believing that it can happen. She then answered many questions from the audience which mainly focused on her writing, her life, and her inspiration. During the 4th block period, McGinnis met with students during a lunch and learn activity where students came in during their lunch break and chatted with her on a more personal level about the books they had been reading by her and questions and comments they had about these titles.
Intent: Improve users' formal education.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The individuals served were able to learn about the writing process, publishing a book, Edgar Allan Poe's short stories, Mindy McGinnis' tales, and much more. As a result, many students were inspired to read and write based on her experiences. The attitude of many students about becoming a writer and becoming a reader were changed based on McGinnis' engaging way of presenting her story and her novels.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Based on the results of the surveys, staff input, and student input via the survey or conversations with librarians, future program planning will include future author visits, taking into account the authors and interests students suggested on the survey. They were pleased that the majority of students felt they learned something from the presentation, and over 45% of students felt inspired in the areas of reading and writing.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Start promoting early on and keep going. Some classes and students signed up very early while others waited until the last minute. Keeping the information out there is key to reaching the maximum number of participants.
