General Information
Title: Youth Services
State Project Code: 28
Start Date: 10/01/2022
End Date: 09/30/2023
Abstract: Zoom meetings for Youth services staff were provided weekly during the reporting year. This weekly hour provides an opportunity to exchange information, ideas, strategies and for programmers throughout the state to lead their peers in professional development. These meetings have also become a vital platform for sharing information on upcoming programs and activities from all departments of the Arkansas State Library. Virtual and in person sessions for Educational Co-ops and state education conference sessions were offered to promote participation in the Arkansas Choice Book Awards where students read and vote to select the winners of the Arkansas Diamond Primary Award, The Charlie May Simon Award and the Arkansas Teen Book Award. This reporting period promotional materials for all three awards were developed by the Coordinator for Youth Services and placed in files for schools and public libraries in Arkansas to print as needed to promote the awards. These files will be accessible throughout the awards cycle. This reporting year also included the developmental stages of a new Puppet Share program that will allow public libraries to borrow performance ready puppet kits for a one month period. There are currently five (5) themes, with more anticipated during this current five (5) year plan. Kits will begin circulation in the next reporting period.

Title: Programmer Zooms
Narrative: Forty (40) programmer zooms were held during the reporting period. Zoom content is split between information and training opportunities with state library staff and time for free discussion among peers to answer questions, provide support and enhance networking throughout the state. The increase in the number of offered zooms was the result of schedule changes and the challenge of finding times for the most programmers to participate. An experiment of 2 weekly time options allowed the continuation and even the increase of zooms offered despite other departmental activities that would otherwise have cancelled the zoom for that week. Regular attendance of the zoom fluctuates between 8 and 32 participants. Sessions are recorded and shared with over 300 programmers statewide to view as they can find the time. Cloud storage limits can affect the amount of time a zoom recording is available.
Intent: Improve the library workforce.

Title: Arkansas Choice Book Awards
Narrative: The Coordinator of Youth Services is part of a three (3) person support team from the Arkansas State Library, the Arkansas Department of Education’s Division of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Arkansas Literacy Association. The support team facilitates the work of the committees for the Arkansas Diamond Primary Award (K-3rd), The Charlie May Simon Award (4-6 grades), and the Arkansas Teen Book Award. The support team hosts zoom meetings for each award, compiles the considerations lists and created promotional materials. Posters and bookmarks for all three awards were developed and loaded into google drive files so that schools and libraries can print the materials as needed throughout the school year and awards cycles. Additional options for posters and bookmarks were created so that titles could be promoted individually. Training sessions for the Educational Co Ops were consolidated into four (4) zoom sessions and were paired with training sessions on the Arkansas Traveler Databases to create a full day of Professional Development for school and library staff. Sessions of the awards were also presented at state conferences.
Intent: Improve the library workforce.

Title: Oral Health Month -dental kit distribution
Narrative: The Arkansas State Library partnered with Oral Health Arkansas to distribute five thousand (5000) kits of toothpaste, brushes and floss to Arkansas public libraries. Libraries were also given information materials to create displays. Local dentists were invited to libraries for special programs and even some exams. This distribution allowed public libraries to reach out to patron families and provide a service many may have not had access to previously.
Intent: Improve the library workforce.
