General Information
Title: ARPA - Image scanners for Washington State Library
State Project Code: 09550-ARPA-02 E & J
Start Date: 12/01/2021
End Date: 09/30/2022
Abstract: This project funded the purchase of two image scanners for increasing throughput for digital projects at Washington State Library. During the pandemic, WSL saw an increase in the demand for digital access to WSL's unique collection materials, including large format items that require specialized flatbed scanners.
State Goal: Goal 2. Preserve and share Washington’s stories using methods and tools that balance accessibility

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Although previously WSL could require researchers to view certain items in-person, that was not an option during pandemic closures and while travel was restricted. The purchase of these scanners allows WSL to better serve patrons remotely and increases WSL's capacity to create its own digital surrogates for fragile collections.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Having the equipment necessary to digitize oversize collections items increases WSL's ability to share maps, large format photos, and other highly requested materials while protecting the originals. This ability is an important part of WSL's capacity to preserve and share Washington's stories.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Involving staff who will use the equipment in the purchasing process ensures that it will meet their unique needs.
