Abstract: Grand County Public Library identified a need for new audiovisual equipment in our large meeting room. The replacement of outdated and failing equipment has enhanced the quality and accessibility of library programs and has improved free and equitable access to modern technology in our public meeting room space. The new technology supports community entities in meeting their educational and organizational goals. The library purchased a ceiling-mounted projector, A/V console, video-conferencing camera, microphones and gaming equipment.

Title: Teen Game & Hang
Narrative: Two Teen Game & Hang events have been held for local youth ages 12-18. The events include two gaming carts each supplied with a UHD monitor, Xbox S console, four Xbox controllers, and four gaming headphones. Teen patrons are provided with a digital library of age-appropriate games to choose from. Additionally, a Nintendo Switch with Nintendo Sports, and four gaming controllers are connected to the new audio and projection system. Patrons enjoy playing the Nintendo Sports games at life-like proportions and fully engaging in the body movement sensing controllers.  Offline board games and Oculus VR games were also provided. The majority of the youth that attend have reported not having console gaming systems at home, and enjoy the opportunity to explore the different systems while playing alongside peers in a safe and supervised environment.
Intent: Improve library's physical and technology infrastructure.

Title: Youth Services Switch Sports
Narrative: A weekly Switch Sports competition was held for youth patrons ages 10-18. The Nintendo Switch gaming console was connected to the new audio and projection system in the large meeting room.  Youth participated in a variety of active games using body motion sensing controllers. The new projection systems allowed patrons to safely enjoy the games in a large open space and interact with the gaming platform at life-like proportions. The majority of the youth had not previously had experience playing the Nintendo Switch platform before, and the minority had never played it in a large space with a projector that allowed them to simulate actual sports movement. They especially enjoyed playing tennis and jousting.
Intent: Improve library's physical and technology infrastructure.

Title: Adult Services presented documentary movie screening
Narrative:

The library presented a documentary film series using the Community Connection and Inspiration Station with great results. Being able to show subtitles on the screen enhanced accessibility for hearing-impaired patrons, and the new projector provided a sharper image on screen, improving accessibility for sight-impaired patrons. The ceiling-mounted projector also improved safety by eliminating trip hazards on the floor from cords, and created more floor space for seating. The new system also greatly simplified the process of streaming video content.

Title: Local organizations utilize Community Connection and Inspiration Station
Narrative:

Library staff have assisted local organizations to utilize the new system for regular meetings. Connecting to the system to present PowerPoint slide shows on-screen while video conferencing would not have been previously possible with the library’s old tech.

Presenters have reported appreciation for the meeting space and new equipment that facilitates the inclusion of both in-person and virtual attendees.

Title: Teen Drop-In Console Gaming Program
Narrative: The drop-in gaming program offers two gaming carts, each supplied with an Xbox S console, controllers, headphones, and monitor for teen patrons to utilize during teen library hours. This has been popular amongst teen patrons who do not own consoles at home or who enjoy playing their favorite games on newer gaming platforms. Each gaming cart is supplied with a digital library of age-appropriate games. Previously, the library only had PC gaming experiences for teens, and this has allowed patrons to experience a wider variety of technology that many did not have prior access to.
Intent: Improve library's physical and technology infrastructure.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Program attendees have been enjoying high-quality programs and lectures that begin on time and run without technical difficulties. Participants in adult and youth programming have been better able to see and hear presenters and program content, with fewer distractions from malfunctioning equipment, and enjoyed a safer, less-cluttered program environment. Youth Services has seen greater attendance and more interest now that up-to-date gaming programs are offered. In Moab, cost-free meeting room space with A/V equipment is scarce, and local non-profits and community groups are appreciating access to state-of-the-art equipment for meetings and presentations.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
This project is helping to address the digital divide in our isolated, rural community. Many individuals, families and community groups do not have access to reliable internet and/or the technology imperative to achieving personal, educational and organizational goals. This inequity has been reduced by providing free access to public meeting room space with up-to-date audio/visual equipment. Additionally, the quality and effectiveness of library programming has been greatly enhanced due to the equipment purchased with this grant, including programming that is appealing to teens who have few options for free, safe after-school activities.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
We learned that many factors are outside of our control. As a library in a rural community, we are geographically distant from companies that provide A/V systems. We experienced long delays, equipment malfunctions, and long waits for repairs. Due to unforeseen supply chain issues, some components have still not been installed, resulting in a delay in our ability to advertise or announce this project to the community as planned. It is wise to keep goals and planned activities manageable and flexible in case of supply chain issues or equipment breakages or malfunctions.
