Title: Landes Community Engagement and Leadership Project
State Project Code: 40-9220
Start Date: 07/01/2021
End Date: 09/30/2022
Abstract: The Landes Community Engagement and Leadership Project provided better representation, relationship-building, and community-driven Library and City services to an underserved, predominantly Latinx neighborhood by hiring, training, and mentoring four local, young adult interns who conducted surveys and community conversations with local residents. The team of interns canvassed 1,700 homes and held five community conversations with over 50 participants. Through the leadership and guidance of the Project's Professional Assistant, the interns developed workforce related skills and helped provide a trusted connection for residents to give input and direction on desperately wanted and needed Library and City services moving forward.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The Landes Community Engagement and Leadership Project allowed the Library to partner with Neighborhood Services and Parks and Recreation in a way that had not been done before. The City and Library services survey creation was collaborative with these departments as were the efforts of the project. The survey was completed by 209 households with 15% done in Spanish and 85% done in English. Residents prioritized the types of services and programs they would like to see at the Landes Community Center. The top ten types of services included having a Mini-Library at the Center. The survey results and comments will be used by the City's Development Services Department to help write a Request for Proposals for a redesign of the Center. The City is making funding available for the City departments involved in this project to staff and bring programming to the Center in Fall 2022. Two interns expressed interest in working with the Library again if and when the project is repeated. The others are off to college.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
The City and Library services survey was extremely helpful in program planning for the Landes Community Center, as it not only asked about programs and services but also best times of day to have programming and age groups of those who would participate in activities. Collaborative efforts of City Departments will extend to other neighborhood centers and there is a plan for the Library to seek funding to repeat the project in other underserved neighborhoods. This project has initiated informed decisions about the Center that will need to be community-driven to prove successful.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Getting buy-in from stakeholders was key to the success of this. Working closely with the pastor of the local church on this project proved to be one of the best decisions made since he had contact with so many of the residents of the Landes community. The project was also supported by other leaders in the City who are on the front lines of racial equity work. They contributed their time by meeting with the interns and talking about leadership and even recommended candidates for the Professional Assistant and Intern positions. Having the support of Library Administration and other City departments helped give the project more reach, credibility and tangible results.
