General Information
Title: Let's Get it Started! Library + S.T.E.A.M. St. John Delphos
State Project Code: I-1-22
Start Date: 07/01/2021
End Date: 09/30/2022
Abstract: The purpose of the grant was to ignite the use of our CreatorSpace by providing staff with tools and materials to incorporate S.T.E.A.M activities into their lessons.  The grant allowed students to be exposed to electronics, laser engraving, 3D printing, robotics and more.
The school used the grant to purchase materials for 3D printers and a laser cutter.  The school purchased a variety of materials that students could use and experiment with to create such things as brush bots and UFO’s. The school found students collaborating and working through problems as a team.
The school also purchased video equipment with the grant and the results were phenomenal.  The students spearheaded a Media Club and they were busy, busy, busy!  One of the students was even given the opportunityt o work with a professional at a basketball game because of her interest and involvement in the Media Club!

Title: Media/Camcorder Instruction
Narrative: The school, through this grant provided video instruction to student members of the Media Club.  Students learned about video with tips for being behind the camera and in front of the camera.  Students learned about battery life, sound capture, lighting, and posture. Interested students attended lengthy training on editing and merging clips.  A local business (video producer)critiqued the students’ production and provided pointers.  He provided opportunities for the students to participate in filming for one of his productions.
Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Title: CreatorSpace at Work
Narrative:

CreatorSpace at Work: Students were free to sign up for afterschool activity in the CreatorSpace.  The space was open for the students to engage in whatever they were interested in.  Approximately 12 students attended each session.
Students took advantage of skills learned in the classroom on using TinkerCad to design objects.  Students were free to design their own objects and learned how to transfer their project to be sliced and printed (3D).
The entire fourth grade students went through the TinkerCad lesson.  Other students learned on the fly during their own time or when they were using free time CreatorSpace.
Students also were exposed to the laser printer and those interested were allowed to create and use the machine (under adult supervision.) Students chose from the material supplied by the grant and experimented with speeds and power.
High School students using the space were free to use the equipment as well.
Students were given instruction in the classroom on electronics and complete circuits.  They followed the steps to create brushbots with supplies provided by this grant.
Faculty members use supplies provided by this grant for hands on activities related to S.T.E.A.M.  For example, the second graders used the craft sticks to create catapults. Third graders, working through the engineering design process, created UFO’s. The high school photography students’ photoshopped images of the creations into imaginative scenes.  After learning about Edison and electricity, fifth graders will be using materials to create their own flashlights.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The afterschool program is very popular as is the open CreatorSpace time for HS students. It is hoped that high school interest will build again this year as school progresses. . Evident are problem solving and teamwork, communication and collaboration, and imaginative independent creators. More is going on than what has been recorded. This grant has been deemed successful because of the impact it has had and will continue to have for our students; students like 3D printer Grant, who, with a smile, said, “I now know what I want to do when I grow up!”
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
These findings are important because they help the school see where there might be areas of improvement. Observation of the calendar indicated that more teachers still need to get on board. Empty shelves indicated items were being used but not in the CreatorSpace. This is acceptable because it indicates students are involved in hands-on activities. For example, the box of LED lights was not available because a teacher brought the box to a different location for use. The school did find though, that many teachers were using the materials, but they were not using the big machines.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The survey resulted in 14% of the middle grade students being ambivalent about participating in further library activities. The school thought that was too large of a percentage. Students weren’t sure the fun activities involved learning, but very few disliked them. Observation of calendar indicated it was often the same teachers using the space multiple times. Visual observation indicated that the Media Club students were working on their bi-monthly productions all the time. Everyday there would be at least one student working on an aspect of their production. Throughout the day students would be working together during their lunch or study hall to record, edit and plan. Many teachers were still hesitant on using the big equipment. The library needs to do a better job of exposing the staff to these tools so students have the opportunity to use them.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
Yes
Explain:
The school is thinking about extending the afterschool CreatorSpace to more than once a week.
Do you anticipate changing the types of activities and objectives addressed by the project:
Yes
Explain:
The school would like to introduce 3D printing to older students who missed the instruction and have the students who learned last year, use 3D printing to use what they have learned and apply it to solving a problem. Staff members would like to implement the brushbot activity again. Staff members would like to use the LED lights for paper circuits. So the goal is to continue to expand the scope to include everyone in the school at least once a year. It seems once some students start “playing” they are hooked and want more time.
