Abstract: The goal of this project was to deliver library services in a new normal. Through virtual/hybrid services and improved computer and internet services, the Hopi Tribal Library helped bridge the digital divide by delivering uninterrupted library services, including virtual intergenerational library programs and electronic collection materials. The funds were used to employ a Library Technician, Library Aide, two Traditional Storytellers, and two  videographers. In addition, eBooks, programming materials, and personal protective equipment were also purchased.

Title: Native American Stories for Young People
Narrative: The Library hosted book club and story hour presentations for children. Events included Early Reader Storytime with stories presented in English and Hopi; Home School Buddies Story Hour with STEAM activities; and Hopi Coyote Folk Tales told by Hopi Elders.

List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Through the regular storytimes, library staff learned that approximately 20% of the attendees were struggling readers. Staff addressed the issue by developing storytimes to address oral language skills, phonological awareness, phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. A book club was formed with students from 6th to 8th grades. The biggest challenge with the book club was getting the attendees to interact to discuss the book. In the end, the participants enjoyed the book club. Some participants wanted to read more books of the same author and have an author discussion virtually or in person.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
This grant opportunity to add staff to deliver core library services and programs emphasizing the Hopi Culture, language, and a variety of library programs have been most rewarding for the patrons. It has been realized there is a need to continue to deliver reading activities, book clubs, and word games for all ages, to reinforce word recognition and meaning, to increase reading skills of young patrons, and to develop a love for reading. The experience with the Native Language storytime activities indicated that the library should continue the Native Language storytime, and offer a Native Language class/training to learn the written version of the language. Being that Hopi is an oral tradition, approximately 80% of the population 55 years and older do not read or write Hopi. Native Language storytime is a new concept to the Hopi language and a valuable goal to add to the library goals. The virtual programs require tech savvy library staff.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Offering virtual/hybrid Hopi storytimes and other library programs requires additional staff with technological knowledge and expertise, as well as additional preparation time to include: planning the activity, advertising, preparing activity materials, test runs of the virtual/hybrid program making certain everything works well in order to deliver an uninterrupted virtual program, having a good recording area for sound quality, delivering a flawless activity, and evaluating the activity. In regard to Native Language activities, it may be difficult to find a skilled Native Language Reader if the library staff do not have the skill to read the native language.

One of the changes that will most likely take effect is having fewer virtual programs. It seems to requires two staff to run a virtual program well. This will mean arranging virtual programs with the Navajo County Library District Programmer or having a volunteer to assist with virtual programs.
