Abstract: From sub-recipient: After two years of the Covid-19 caused pandemic, youth and their parents became interested in returning to activities at the Shelton Public Library. To encourage patrons to return to the library, various programs were initiated with grant funding. Project G.R.A.P.E.S. - Gravity, Reading, Assembly, Programming, Engineering and Skills was implemented in March 2022 after the library was awarded a 2022 ARPA Youth Grant for Excellence Award of $810.00. The project is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provision of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Nebraska Library Commission. G. Gravity: The ThinkFun Gravity Maze Marble Brain Game and STEM Toy for boys and girls ages 8 and up was purchased for $29.67. The gravity maze utilizes gravity to teach youth to use spatial reasoning and planning skills. Youth liked to use the game in groups of two or three. R. Reading: Reading Skills continue to be developed by youth who read books and instruction manuals from March to June 2022. Books and materials currently in the library along with instruction manuals with the materials purchased for G.R.A.P.E.S. were used for these skills. A. Assembly: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math skills were enhanced by the purchase of 5 Set STEM Kit, DC Motors Electronic Assembly Kit costing $23.99; a 5 Set STEM Kit, DC Motors Electronic Assembly Robotic Kit costing $23.99; a 6 STEM Kit, DC Motors Electronic Assembly Robotic Science Kit for $23.99 and a Lucky Doug STEM Building Projects Toys for Kids Building Construction Model Kit costing $18.99. These STEM kits allowed youth and parents to create using assembly skills. P. Programming: Beginners interested in programming used the ELEGOO UNO Project Super Starter Kit & UNO R3 Compatible with Arduino IDE costing $29.75 plus the ELEGOO 120 pcs Multicolored Dupont Wire costing $6.82 and the ELEGOO Upgraded 37 in 1 Sensor Modules Kit with Arduino IDE UNO R3 MEGA Nano costing $34.98. Youth used these kits learning programming and do-it-yourself experiments in a limited fashion. E. Engineering - To get hands on experience in mechanical engineering, youth used the Playz V8 Combustion Engine Model Building Kit costing $67.85; the Trends UK Jaynes Build Your Own V8 Engine costing $69.95; the Haynes Build Your Own Internal Combustion Engine costing $48.94 and the Playz Train Steam Engine Model costing $58.15. The Train Steam Engine does produce steam. S. Skills - The Cricut Rose Maker costing $349.99 plus the Cricut Tools Basic CORE Color costing $13.00 and the Cricut Variety Pack costing $17.49 allow skill development. Adults are learning to use the Cricut Maker to help youth use the machine. Currently the machine is used to create vinyl iron ons for the summer reading bags and bookmarks for the summer reading participants. Youth will be able to make paper crafts, iron ons, vinyl decals, sewing projects, leather crafts and balsa models.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
From sub-recipient: The library brought hands on interactive experiences in technology, mechanical engineering, gravity, reading and programming to young patrons and their parents. It was expected parents would be interested in doing these activities with their children. Parents are extremely busy these days and getting them in the library with their children was more difficult than expected. Youth have short attention spans for new activities. They are able to stay engaged with computer games but not on activities requiring problem solving and thinking skills. Youth did get all the STEM kits put together. One that none completed was Metal Models by Lucky Doug. It is for youth 6+, yet 11 and 14 year olds lost interest in trying to assemble. It remains unassembled. The unexpected outcome of the difficulty in engaging youth for a period of time with these activities is one the library must address. All the materials remain in the library for youth and parents to use.
