Abstract: Illinois Libraries Present provided premier online events at equitable prices for participating member libraries of all sizes and budgets.  This project connected  communities and audiences across the state through shared event experiences.  Through this joint programming cooperative project, Illinois libraries improved their capacity to provide high-quality online events for their patrons regardless of the participating library's size or budget.  Illinois libraries are known for resource sharing, and while that often referred strictly to materials, this initiative provided a cost-effective resource sharing opportunity for libraries to share programs.  The result was that libraries across the state hosted high-quality, high-profile events for the public to attend, that would otherwise have been cost-prohibitive for a single library to host on its own.

Title: Virtual Events with Authors
Narrative: The goal for Illinois Libraries Present was to provide high-quality, high-profile online events with nationally recognized names that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive for single libraries to hold on their own.  Costs were based on each library’s operating budget to make fees as equitable as possible.  This allowed smaller or rural libraries to afford participation and made the programs accessible. There was a full launch to Illinois public libraries at the beginning of October 2021 to have libraries with signed intergovernmental agreements poised to offer the first virtual program to their communities in January 2022.  A programming committee with statewide representation scheduled the following speakers:

In January 2022, over 575 people attended the first live virtual event, and over 400 watched the recording with Silvia Moreno-Garcia, the author of the critically acclaimed novels Certain Dark Things, Gods of Jade and Shadow, and Mexican Gothic.  Her newest book, Velvet Was the Night, was included on The New York Times list of 100 notable books of 2021. 95% of respondents found value in attending. 

In February 2022, almost 600 people virtually joined An Evening with Jasmine Guillory.  Guillory is a writer, lawyer, and New York Times bestselling author of six romance novels, including The Wedding Date, The Proposal, and While We Were Dating. Over 300 people completed the post-event survey and rated the event at 4.6 / 5 on a scale of 1 to 5. Feedback ranged from "Thank you for the opportunity to learn how writers do what they do," to "A single library cannot offer this kind of author event, but combined libraries, along with generous grants, give us the opportunity to meet a variety of authors.  And it also gives the authors and their books broader exposure.  Thank you.”

In March 2022, over 1,500 watched An Evening with Jenny Lawson.  Lawson is a journalist, author, and blogger known for her candor in sharing her struggle with mental illness. Her previous books Let's Pretend This Never Happened and Furiously Happy were No. 1 New York Times bestsellers.  Almost 750 people completed the post-event survey and rated the event at 4.5 / 5 on a scale of 1 to 5. Feedback ranged from "Lovely and funny discussion with Jenny. The moderator did an excellent job," to "I selfishly just wish it was longer." Respondents rated their likelihood to attend future events at 4.6 / 5 on a scale of 1 to 5. 

In April 2022, Nick Offerman and Jeff Tweedy had 7,942 attend their program. Best known for his breakout role as Ron Swanson in the acclaimed television series Parks and Recreation, actor and New York Times bestselling author Nick Offerman discussed his newest book, Where the Deer and the Antelope Play: The Pastoral Observations of One Ignorant American Who Loves to Walk Outside.  As the founding member and leader of the Grammy Award-winning American rock band Wilco, and before that the co-founder of the alt-country band Uncle Tupelo, Jeff Tweedy is one of contemporary music's most accomplished songwriters, musicians, and performers. Jeff is also the author of two New York Times bestsellers: How to Write One Song: Loving the Things We Create and How They Love Us Back and Let’s Go (So We Can Get Back).

In May 2022, Jessamine Chan and Emily Maloney had 487 attendees join the discussion about the systems of power that impact our lives, our families, and our finances, all through the lens of their acclaimed books, The School for Good Mothers (Chan) and Cost of Living (Maloney).

In June 2022, Kwame Onwuachi had 1,444 attendees join a discussion about his cookbook My America: Recipes from a Young Black Chef.  Michelle Zauner discussed her music career and her beloved bestseller Crying in H Mart with 2,452 live attendees.  One attendee said, "Both chefs were awesome! Representation matters and as a black woman it was great to see someone who looks like my husband, father, brother etc. share their love for culinary, perspective regarding food disparity and real estate/waste issues in our country.

99% of library staff involved expressed the benefits of participating in a shared cooperative for public programming. 75% of participants surveyed gained knowledge from speakers.

Regardless of the size, location, or operating budget of the library, they were able to offer high-quality events with nationally recognized speakers to their patrons.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The biggest challenge was getting the speaker bureaus and publishers to return contracts quickly. As a result, our initial timeline for announcing and marketing the programs was delayed. The expectation was for a 4 to 6 month window for marketing but the reality was an average of 2-3 months.
