General Information
Title: Resource Sharing of Supplemental Library Collections
State Project Code:
Start Date: 10/01/2019
End Date: 09/30/2021
Abstract: The CT State Library provided circulating library materials in print, audio, and digital formats to help supplement library collections. These materials were used most often by public and school libraries. Before the COVID-19 closures, library staff and volunteers visited the Service Center in person to select items, request them via the online catalog, or call/email Service Center staff with special requests. Delivery services were provided through deliverIT CT, another LSTA-funded project. Since March 2020, the Service Center has been open by appointment only and 130 library visits are recorded for this funding year. Among those visitors were 53 unique schools/libraries using curbside delivery. A further breakdown reveals that it was used by 33 schools, 19 public libraries, and once for the CT Library Consortium.

Narrative:

New materials were selected and cataloged by subject experts, including the State Library's Children’s/Young Adult Services Consultant. Support staff process and shelved the new materials. The Connecticut collection now includes books that were nominated for the 2021Connecticut Book Award  from the Connecticut Center for the Book. Both Baker & Taylor and Follett donated discussion sets (12 copies per set) for titles nominated for the Nutmeg Book Award for grades 2-12. As the service center returned within the year to normal internal staff operations, acquisitions by September 30 rose to 7.834.

Title: Service Center Circulation
Narrative:

Circulating library materials included children's and young adult books (fiction and nonfiction), book discussion sets, Maker kits, and audio books on CD for all ages. As some COVID closures continued into this funding year, the number of items circulated remained below normal but reached 10, 338, of which 4,418 items were part of discussion sets, 113 were 30-day loan items, and 9 were picture books. Circulation averaged 861 per month. Most often, these materials were borrowed by schools and small libraries with modest budgets or limited shelving space who in turn lend the materials to their patrons. Support staff handled all circulation tasks, re-shelving, processing, and weeding. They also managed individual appointments and curbside delivery, while assisting in the weeding and preparation for transport of the book collection of the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped from its previous home to the Middletown Library Service Center.

Intent: Improve users’ ability to obtain and/or use information resources.
