Title: West Virginia Center for the Book
Narrative:

The West Virginia Center for the Book, a West Virginia Library Commission program, funded several yearly projects and exhibits. The largest project is the Appalachian Heritage Writer-In-Residence Program at Shepherd University. The Center for the Book provided a grant to publish the annual anthology of works from regional authors, which is distributed to every public library. This year the stories were selected by Dorothy Allison.

The 2021 One Book, One West Virginia statewide read featured Marie Manilla's The Patron Saint of Ugly. Unlimited access to digital copies of the work was made available to citizens from July through September, with a virtual book discussion held on the Center's Facebook page.   Additional discussion guides and a library kit were to libraries and book discussion groups to encourage community discussion.

The Center for the Book participated in the virtual West Virginia Book Festival as a sponsor and the virtual National Book Festival.

Intent: Improve users’ ability to participate in their community.

Title: Adult Reading Program
Narrative:

The Library Commission maintains a collection of 740 Book Discussion Kits that have everything needed to have a thriving group reading experience. Library closures and groups not meeting in person caused the circulation of reading program materials to be lower than years past; this year, only 189 kits circulated. However, as individuals were more comfortable with in-person meetings, requests for titles in the collection increased.

Intent: Improve users’ ability to participate in their community.

Title: Special Weeks Promoting Reading and Libraries
Narrative:

Adventure awaited West Virginia families during Family Read Week in November.  West Virginia Family Read Week is an opportunity for libraries throughout the state to encourage parents and caregivers to read with their children.  The Library Commission compiled supplemental materials with activities and reading lists for families, sample press releases, social media posts, and surveys for public libraries. In addition, the virtual reading platform incorporated activities for family members who preferred virtual activities instead of in-person ones.

The West Virginia Library Commission provided a media kit and social media graphics to encourage the public libraries to celebrate National Library Week while COVID was still front and center in many communities.

Intent: Improve users’ ability to participate in their community.
