Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Public and school libraries were able to upgrade old technology, expand digital network access, purchase internet accessible devices, and purchase supplies to keep staff and communities healthy. Funds not distributed directly to libraries were used to add titles to the SD State Library SD Titles to Go eBook collection because eBook usage went up dramatically during the pandemic, and added titles gave citizens more reading options.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Many SD libraries do not have funding to upgrade old computers. CARES funds allowed 37 libraries to purchase 60 new desktop and laptop computers, 32 new tablets and e-readers, and printers.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
SD State Library does not normally do sub-grants. It was important for staff members involved to create detailed criteria for grant awards, keep very good records, and work closely with the Finance Department at the SD Department of Education. Educating libraries on the importance of having a technology plan also became a large part of this project.
