General Information
Title: Polynesian Photo Archives - Keith Dahl Collection
State Project Code:
Start Date: 10/01/2019
End Date: 09/30/2021
Abstract: The Polynesian Photo Archives Keith Dahl Collection has been an ongoing preservation project of approximately 800,000 5x8 photos that the Feleti Barstow Public Library inherited from the Keith Dahl estate.  These photos of local events, sports, and portraits are dated from 1979 - 2012.  Curating this collection has been assigned to two Library Assistants.  They are the most familiar with the collection and have had some professional development training to carry out the project.  The sorting of the collection is done and yielded about 600,000 photos with about 170,000 duplicates.  The numbering is also completed.  The monotonous work of scanning and uploading (with watermarks) remains.  We are also in the midst of a crowd sourcing this project.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The resignation of the Library Assistant in the PPA has caused a minor set back to production. Other challenges include remote hosting of the platform which have caused delays as well. More man hours are needed to complete this project. The collection is very popular in the community as photos have appeared on social media outlets. It has been a challenge to get the community to help us identify these photos (crowd sourcing) on the website. We will turn to social media to aid our efforts.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Systematic processes are key to running the monotonous tasks of projects like these. Also, equipment and software investments are needed for continual upgrade to aid process efficiency.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Consider a planning grant. Also, consider local hosting platform (if expertise can be found).
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
Yes
Explain:
We will have to dedicate more man hours in order to complete this project and build on the momentum we were able to create this summer.
