General Information
Title: Staff Development
State Project Code:
Start Date: 10/01/2019
End Date: 09/30/2021
Abstract: Providing opportunities for staff to pursue professional development and training that are related to their duties is vital given the current state of librarianship in the territory.  Because American Samoa's library positions are dominated by paraprofessionals, it is important to provide opportunities for training to enhance the quality of library services in the territory.  Professional Librarians also need the opportunity to maintain their skill sets through training, professional conferences, and continuing education opportunities.  We have added the Darren Hardy Training Vault as a resource for training and staff development.  The training vault focuses on the areas of productivity/motivation, leadership, and marketing for professional development.  A more business like approach to marketing and delivering library services was sought in response to declining library visits and program attendance.  This training will be ongoing depending on outcomes in the next year.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Several key staff have moved on to take advantage of opportunities provided by a large influx of federal funding into the territory due to COVID. Also, the political appointments of complete new leadership to the SLAA Board has left little to no institutional knowledge at the trustee level. A reorganization of sorts has begun at the SLAA beginning with the hiring of a new Territorial Librarian.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
3 SLAA staff have moved on with the significant investment made in their professional training.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
While no-one could have predicted the attrition of the 'great resignation.' Paying closer attention to the timing of the offering may have saved the significant investment made. A long term commitment should be sought before investing in training.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
Yes
Explain:
A selection process needs to be put in place that includes a long term commitment to the training investment.
Do you anticipate changing the types of activities and objectives addressed by the project:
No
