Title: John de la Howe School of Agriculture Partnership
State Project Code: IID-20-02
Start Date: 10/01/2020
End Date: 09/30/2021
Abstract: The McCormick County Library worked with the SC Governor’s School for Agriculture Library at John de la Howe to provide both students and county residents with a wide-ranging collection of agricultural books and magazines. The collection was promoted via a public open house event and student informational sessions. The partnership also provided students hands-on learning experience with an indoor hydroponic growing system. Students and teachers attended a field trip to a hydroponic lettuce farm. The project also included a county-wide reading initiative that culminated in a visit and public presentation by well-known author, farmer and businesswoman Sarah Frey.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
To measure changes related to the programmatic use of the hydroponic system and the hydroponic farm field trip, the school librarian produced a video. In the video, students, administrators, teachers and photos share the changes the hydroponic system brought to the campus. This video can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/4OiaIEeXNqI
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
According to the school librarian, “Most of the students did not have any knowledge of hydroponics prior to the hydroponic field trip and installation of the hydroponic system in the library. After being exposed to hydroponics, students were fascinated by the quantity and quality of the lettuce grown. Following the field trip, one student elected to set up her own aquaponic system for her agricultural science fair project. Many people who witnessed the hydroponic system in the library made inquiries as to how they could purchase a smaller version for their own homes.”
