Title: Planning, Preparation, and Partners
Narrative:

To better shape our workshops to the needs of our target participants, the library carried out a series of dialogues with participants in the East Hartford School Business Partnership program.  The dialogues were conducted during the lunch wave at school and those who participated were given free special lunches. Recent graduate recruited to attend were eligible to receive a gift card donated by East Hartford CONNects, a Working Cities initiative. As a result, adjustments were made to workshop content, scheduling, and communication with partners. The pandemic required a shift from in-person to zoom workshops.

The project manager collaborated with key project partners to prepare the curriculum and presentations. A staff person at East Hartford Public Schools recruited a team from a Glastonbury business group to conduct mock interviews for job-seeking participants.  East Hartford CONNects staff recruited presenters on “Training and Certification”, “Financial Literacy,” and “Building a Professional Network.” A partner from the Liberty Bank assembled a team of colleagues to conduct the “Credit for Life Fair.”   East Hartford Youth Services created a workshop on workplace conflict and communication, involving a young social work student whose age would make participants more comfortable sharing experiences.

Title: Promotion and Workshop Execution
Narrative:

To promote the workshops, the library staff distributed flyers digitally to school staff, dialogue participants, and parents and guardians of students. The Town of East Hartford sent out a press release which was included in the local newspaper. A brochure and book list were displayed and distributed.

All of the sessions were created in zoom due to the pandemic. Despite a lower attendance rate than anticipated, many parents and students who had indicated support fora spring break series of classes. instead, seemingly decided to travel or enjoy the outdoors.  Nonetheless, the students who did attend were highly engaged and attended most, if not all, of the workshops offered.  Total attendance numbered 87 and 41 contributed evaluations of the project.  One in-person workshop that was designed to provide participants with a professional head shot required special preparation that had to be approved by the town due to COVID.  Digital photos were emailed to those who sat for the photographer within the week.

Intent: Improve users' ability to use resources and apply information for employment support.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Though COVID restricted attendance, 87 different individuals attended some of a series of 10 workshops and were able to receive a great deal of personalized attention. Forty-one responded with evaluations and 70% of those said that they learned something by participating in this activity and 68% said that they were likely to apply what they had learned.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:

Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Perhaps the most significant lesson was the necessity of reliable community partners. The entire program was dependent on partner and the partners of partners, who secured presenters with expertise, time, and willingness to share with youth. The library could never have executed the workshops on their own. In addition, the project manager learned that designing a project with flexibility built it is critical in our contemporary world. The impact of COVID on attendance went beyond what we imagined as we reshaped the project in the months leading up to execution.
