General Information
Title: Digitizing Greencastle: Indiana Newspapers, 1980-2005
State Project Code: D20-1-3(3)
Start Date: 01/16/2021
End Date: 06/30/2021
Abstract: "Digitizing Greencastle" was a part of a continued collaboration between the Putnam County Public Library and project leaders at DePauw University Library to digitize Greencastle's historic newspapers. Although the historic newspapers are the primary resource for county history, they had previously only been available in print at the Putnam Library, or on microfilm at DePauw University, making it difficult for anyone outside the immediate area to access them. Digitizing them made them available to anyone with internet access. Past collaborations had gone a long way towards digitizing the collection, which dates back to 1837 - but a gap in the years 1980-2005 remained. This project focused on closing that gap. By the end of the grant cycle, over 60,700 pages had been scanned for digitization, and nearly 60,000 of those processed and uploaded to the DePauw University Digital Library and Indiana Memory.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Digitization was performed by an outside vendor who was severely impacted by the COVID pandemic. The project was originally meant to happen in the 2019 grant cycle, but the vendor was unable to digitize the materials sent to them until after that cycle had ended, due to pandemic-related closings and subsequent work backlogs.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
