General Information
Title: CARES ACT: Continuity of educational services
State Project Code: CAP-001
Start Date: 10/01/2019
End Date: 09/30/2021
Abstract: Given the emergency situation that Puerto Rico went through due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19, the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year was affected. This epidemic caused PRDE to join efforts to diversify teaching tools considering virtual environments and educational alternatives to guarantee access to education for all students. During this school year, students attended classes in a combined way (in person and online). Many students did not have access to the technological resources that allowed them to take their classes remotely, so the support of school libraries was required in the teaching and learning process through the printing of educational materials and assignments in collaboration with the classroom teachers. Many students were unable to take their classes virtually so printed materials needed to be provided. Approximately 541 libraries that have photocopiers collaborated in providing services to the students, giving special attention to those who could not attend the virtual classes and those who due to other conditions needed the printed materials. To this effect, the funds were used for the acquisition of toners, drums and paper for the photocopiers in the school libraries in order to reproduce the materials required to meet the immediate and particular needs of each student.

Title: Acquisition and distribution of materials
Narrative: Acquisition of toners, drums and paper for the photocopiers in the school libraries. The materials were distributed among the seven educational regions. Librarians made the effort of picking up the materials at the school ground selected for the distribution at each one of the regions and worked in the reproduction and delivery of the materials required to meet the immediate and particular needs of each student. A total of 541 units of toner cartridges and drums in addition to 2,261 boxes of paper were distributed.
Intent: Improve users’ ability to obtain and/or use information resources.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Librarians provided assistance to fellow teachers and students in the use and management of meetings and classes using the "Teams" application. Librarians provided assistance to parents not familiar with the use of technology.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
School libraries need to be prepared to satisfy the interests and individual needs of the users in order to provide the appropriate resources and services in emergency circumstances such as a pandemic.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Libraries need to plan and develop new curricular integration activities for the different learning styles to enrich and improve student performance in special or emergency circumstances.
