Title: Overdue Notice Service
Narrative:
The Georgia Public Library Service sends out overdue notices for all PINES member libraries. If an email address or phone number does not exist for the ILS to send a notice for the first attempt at notification, Unique Management attempts to call the user and subsequently sends a 10 or 30 days overdue notice to the patron. This service coupled with a pre-minder service (generated by the ILS) and a quarterly report of overdue materials has assisted our libraries in keeping the total percentage over overdue materials at or below the national average. This in turn makes more material available to our statewide patrons.
Intent: Improve users’ ability to obtain and/or use information resources.

Title: Courier Service
Narrative:
The Georgia Public Library Service provides courier services to each of Georgia’s 62 public library systems headquarters 5 days per week. The ease of placing a hold on materials is evident in the number of holds and transits of materials is evident in the volume. With a total of 1,404,988 transits, the courier service made resources easily accessible and cost effective for our patrons.
The price per piece for the transit of PINES materials is about .35 per piece. This is significantly less than the cost for sending an item via USPS reduced rate programs. Sharing of resources is important for eliminating limited access to materials for educational and professional needs as well as personal enrichment.
Intent: Improve users’ ability to obtain and/or use information resources.

Title: PINES ILS Services
Narrative: GPLS developed the Evergreen Integrated Library System software specifically for use in PINES libraries. PINES offers Georgia’s public libraries and residents a state of the art shared system, and that takes a great deal of technical expertise behind the scenes.
Emerald Data Networks offers specialty software development and support, PINES-specific software development and special projects in order to create and maintain features and workflows requested and required by PINES member libraries. Participation in the Evergreen Development Initiative provides an opportunity for libraries and consortia running Evergreen to maximize their resources by pooling funds to sponsor new software features and bug fixes. Membership in this initiative allows the PINES community to participate in and add their voice to core code development and large community based projects.
Through the services of Syndetics and EBSCO/Novelist, PINES additionally provides additional modes of discovery for library materials within and outside the PINES catalog. These services benefit library users by improving the user’s ability to locate and evaluate specific title of interest, the precision of resource sharing and access to underutilized portions of the statewide collection.
Intent: Improve users’ ability to obtain and/or use information resources.

Title: PINES Student Card
Narrative: Automatically creating student library accounts with data provided by the school district decreases barriers to access for students and reduces staff workload. PINES has developed a method for importing student data from school districts in order to automatically create accounts without manual intervention by library staff. This card allows K-12 students unlimited access to electronic resources and 5 checkouts of library materials with no fines or fees.
As of September 30, there were 15 school districts in 8 different library systems participating in this program.
Intent: Improve users’ ability to obtain and/or use information resources.
