General Information
Title: Cares Act: Employment and Computer Access
State Project Code: 17SB
Start Date: 08/01/2020
End Date: 07/31/2021
Abstract: Staff wanted to help the community and looked at where they could make the best impact.  Employment was one of the things that stood out.  The local workforce center had shut down and the library was the only location in the area that could  help with unemployment.  Staff narrowed the selection down to purchasing two databases.  Gale Presents: Udemy which offered online classes appeared to be a good fit for patrons.  Staff had an overwhelming amount of people request help on creating resumes and who would easily become frustrated working in Word. As a result, staff purchased Cypress Resume which created resumes in minutes while gearing the resume toward specific areas of interest. Staff purchased books on mental health during Covid and how to create resumes and how to job hunt during the pandemic.  Because the library was one of the only places in town with computers available for use staff allowed limited computer usage to maintain 6-foot distancing, staff also purchased Chromebooks for patrons to check out.  While the focus was on  adults, staff also wanted to reach  children who no longer had the ability to go out, do activities and socialize with friends.  Staff knew they couldn’t fill that void, but they could create fun take and make activities that patrons could pick up and do at home.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
• Staff found that that the database Gale Presents: Udemy wasn’t used as often as was expected. • The make and take kits were hit or miss. Participation increased when they had a holiday or a story time theme. • The resume maker was popular and staff received positive feedback from various patrons who used it. One gentleman printed out his resume and said, “Wow, I sound really smart and it didn’t take a long time.” • Our print resources didn’t circulate as much as was to be expected.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
The importance of these findings will help staff when deciding which resources will be kept in the future and what staff will focus on as the budget planning process begins. These findings helped staff understand what patrons look for and how they use the library’s collection.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
• Staff learned not to purchase a more expensive database just because it has all of the bells and whistles. • Promote more • Be flexible in expectations
