General Information
Title: From Galaxy to Earth: Learning Adventure
State Project Code: 40-9087
Start Date: 12/09/2020
End Date: 08/31/2021
Abstract: The goal of this project was to increase STEAM programming available to the OC Public Libraries (OCPL) community, especially to children in underserved communities. Participants had the opportunity to receive STEAM kits including supplies and printed instructions to complete various educational activities from the comfort of their home. In addition to the STEAM kits, participants had access to virtual programs conducted by library staff and posted on a dedicated project website. The topics included Solar System, Earth, eclipses, UV radiation, and coding. The kits and the programs were created as learning opportunities independent of each other. As a result of this project, children and families benefited by having access to meaningful, yet fun hands-on activities and learning opportunities.

Title: Program Activity – Staff Presentation
Narrative: The Project Coordinator and Project Assistant prepared and conducted two presentations via Zoom introducing the grant project to OCPL staff at 32 branches, OCPL Headquarters, and WOW Mobile Library. The presentations “From Galaxy to Earth – Presentation of Kits and Programs to OC Public Libraries Staff” offered an opportunity for staff to learn about the project, the kits, the programs, the kits distribution. The purpose of the presentation was to prepare and inspire OCPL staff to promote the kits and programs within the respective communities. After the presentation staff were more confident to assist patrons with the activities and connect with local communities.

Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Title: Presentation/Performance Activity – Virtual Programs
Narrative: Five virtual programs and two coding classes were created by library staff to help introduce the STEAM kits to the community. Each program included a storytime and an activity. For one of the programs, a professional artist was hired to conduct, film, and edit a 45-minute demonstration of selected art techniques to create art inspired by NASA images.

All programs and coding classes were posted on the OCPL website on a dedicated project site. This site went live before the distribution of the kits started and will be available through June 2022.

Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Title: Creation – STEAM kits
Narrative: Library staff created 855 STEAM kits. Two types of kits were created: “Code N Go Robot Mouse” and “Galaxy to Earth”. The purpose of the kits was to provide youth, ages 0-13 years, the opportunity to learn about STEAM topics related to the NASA theme without having to participate in the library’s virtual programs.

300 "Code N Go Robot Mouse" kits were assembled and included a Robot Mouse and a NASA related activity book. These kits were designed to enable participants to start learning coding, and space.

500 "Galaxy to Earth" mega-kits included materials to conduct STEAM activities.

55 additional mini-kits containing the materials above were created to utilize leftover supplies.

Library staff designed four handouts to guide the participants to conduct the activities independently.

Title: Acquisition - STEAM Kits Supplies and Materials
Narrative:

Library staff procured approximately 21,000 items to create 855 STEM kits. Items included 300 “Code N Go Robot Mouse” sets, “Yardstick Eclipse” kits, UV flashlights, UV beads, merchandise bags, and a variety of arts and crafts supplies. The acquisition of the “Code N Go Robot Mouse” sets, programmable electronic toys, amount to more than 10% of the project budget.

Three hundred fifty-five (355) NASA and space related books were purchased to supplement the information in the kits.

The STEAM kits were designed to enable participants to start learning coding in a fun way and to conduct independently a variety of STEAM activities, such as UV radiation experiments, eclipse activities, and cosmic art.
Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The free STEAM kits were very popular: The Project Coordinator received requests for kits months after they were all distributed. The kit which included the “Code N Go Robot Mouse” set was in very high demand. This kit was preferred over the “Galaxy to Earth” mega-kit which included more items and more activities. Feedback from patrons demonstrated that the Robot Mouse kit was used multiple times, including sharing it with friends, and in more creative ways. It was surprising to receive multiple inquiries about the Robot Mouse, the main component in the “Code N Go Robot Mouse” kits, after all the kits were distributed. Patrons, including school representatives, who had apparently seen/heard about the kits, were willing to purchase the Robot Mouse, and asked The Project Coordinator where they could purchase it. It was surprising how many staff inquired about the specific age group of the kits. The kits designated only the minimum age with consideration of small parts. The virtual programs had lower than expected views. Surprisingly, the storytime segments of the programs had lower views than the activities. The basic coding and the art activities had considerably more views than the rest of the programs. It was surprising to hear from many participants that it was the first time they participated at a program in the library. Most participants heard about the project at OCPL branches, or from OCPL Social Media. The settings of a branch seemed to be more conducive for patrons to learn about innovative programs and for staff to have better opportunity to promote STEAM kits and explain STEAM activities. The live Zoom presentation for staff OCPL staff was very successful. The Project Coordinator and Assistant continued receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from staff who appreciated the project and were more engaged to promote it to patrons.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
In the future we should select interesting kits which allow multiple use and inspire creative use, specify age range for kits, limit recorded virtual programming to activities, and offer more instructional programs, especially coding and arts. We will attract new library users by offering engaging kits/free resources. It will be important to focus distribution of STEAM kits/activities at branches rather than outreach locations. We plan to do live presentations for library staff to introduce new programs and resources.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
If no COVID considerations for safety, create kits That can be circulated in order to reach a larger number of participants. Create only one type of kit to avoid complications for staff and disappointments of participants when they have a preference for the type of kit.

Exemplary NarrativeAll STEAM kits were quickly distributed at 32 branches of OCPL and multiple geographical locations of the WOW Mobile Library. This system of distribution ensured that residents of the whole County of Orange had convenient access to the kits. A formula of distribution of the kits was developed by Library Staff, under the guidance of the Programs Coordinator, to allocate larger amounts of kits to OCPL branches, which qualify for Lunch at the Library, to ensure that underserved communities were better served. The “Learning Resource Code N Go Robot Mouse” set was extremely popular with all participants. The virtual program on basic coding with the use of the Robot Mouse was one of the most viewed programs on the dedicated grant website. Patrons contacted OCPL branches to inquire about the Robot Mouse long after all the kits were distributed (as recent as the day of this report 9/7/2021). Moreover, patrons have expressed interest to purchase the Robot Mouse and have asked where they can purchase it. The use of a QR code linking all printed handouts and promotional materials to the dedicated grant website made it convenient for participants to access the online resources. Several patrons, who were unable to receive STEAM kits after they were all gone, inquired how to sign up to be informed of upcoming programs of OCPL. Library staff referred the patrons to the OCPL Newsletter and Social Media.
