General Information
Title: Mobile Makerspace
State Project Code: NC-20-28
Start Date: 07/01/2020
End Date: 09/30/2021
Abstract: Onslow County Public Library created four makerspaces that are mobile. These four included: 3D printing, sewing & embroidery, circuits, and virtual reality. Programs were hosted at each branch for each makerspace in small groups multiple times per day. The programs were known as "Makerspace Monday." They were conducted for an entire month and continue to be used in programming. Programs were held for school age students, teens, and adults, separately. The library received positive feedback on the programs stressing the opportunity to use machines that they otherwise would not have the opportunity to experience. The project helped introduce and develop life skills in sewing and stitching as well as science learning through 3D print designs.

Title: Makerspace Mondays
Narrative: Four separate makerspace programs were held for “Makerspace Mondays:” Virtual Reality, 3D Printing, Sewing & Embroidery, and Circuits.  The programs were three times each Monday; once for elementary students, once for teens, and once for adults. Programs remained the same with the execution modified for each age. Makerspace Mondays were held at 4 of our branch libraries.

The Virtual Reality program gave participants the opportunity to explore a world within their own, immersing themselves in the world of Oculus and exploring the home of Anne Frank, riding coasters and becoming a Jedis.   For 3D printing, participants created their own keychains with their name on it. Participants used Tinkercad to design the keychain and explored other uses for 3D printing in today’s world.  For Sewing & Embroidery, participants created an envelope-style throw pillowcase with an embroidered monogram. Participants learned the basics, including threading a sewing machine, winding bobbins, and the computerized embroidery functions.  Circuitry offered a creative outlet for participants to learn how electrical works and design their own circuits and grid board with lights and switches.
Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Additional planned outputs include the mobile makerspaces being utilized for regularly scheduled programs and in-house check out. This is ongoing. At grant wrap-up, the program is scheduled for the fall (Sept., Oct., and Nov.) and makerspace items will be cataloged for in-house check-out when not in use for programs.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Observing the outcomes of the programs during the funding period will help staff determine what will need modified for future programs. Time and minimum age were two things we looked at for participants in our programs. It is also ideal to focus our goal for the programs. The Virtual reality program had a goal of allowing individuals to experience the world of virtual reality, but using the program in a way that is more beneficial and educational to individuals would be ideal. Observing these outcomes and inputs allows us to make necessary changes that we know need addressed for improving future programs.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The greatest benefits to learning how to maneuver a mobile makerspace is giving staff at other branches time to acquire, setup and get to know the machines and materials. Looking ahead, I would set days for pickup/drop off of the makerspaces. When we implemented the program, we simply drove the makerspace wherever it needed to be next, albeit two days later or at the end of the week. This affected some individuals in their program preparations.
