Title: Brain Health
Narrative:

The purpose of Brain Health was to create programming to support the cognitive and mental health of Worcester County's aging population. In spite of a global pandemic, the library and staff were able to pivot to provide social distancing programming. "Brain Health advantAGE" supported Worcester County's growing older adult population by developing a multifaceted series that addresses brain health through participatory art programs, gaming programs, and technology training.
Brain Health expanded outreach efforts with Worcester County Commission on Aging, Meals on Wheels, and several long term care facilities in our County; partnered with the Worcester County Arts Council and Ocean City Center of the Arts.

Title: Maryland Accessible Textbook (MAT)
Narrative:
Through the Maryland Accessible Textbook (MAT) program, textbooks were provided to low- and no-vision college students as digital files or physical books and were converted to accessible audio formats like MP3, Daisy, Microsoft Word, or PDF files that can be read by a screen reader like JAWS. The Maryland Accessible Textbook program worked with Disability Student Services departments in Maryland colleges and universities to identify students who needed these accessible formats. MAT program accessed books from databases and direct from publishers and used specialized scanners and tools for conversion. In 2021, 3,538 textbook chapters were made accessible to 52 college students.

Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Title: Rural Collection Development
Narrative: Three Rural Collection Development grants were awarded to systems serving rural communities. Residents of these communities were especially hard hit by COVID-19; not only were health consequences grim, but lack of broadband in these communities meant that residents may not be able to fully engage in digital technologies. Grants provided additional funds to Caroline and Washington Counties, as well as the Southern Maryland Regional Library Association. Material added to these collections were then made available to neighboring libraries and the rest of the state through reciprocal borrowing and a robust interlibrary loan program.
Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Title: Exploration Commons
Narrative: The Carroll County Public Library was able to purchase equipment to outfit the Exploration Commons at the 50 East makerspace and teaching kitchen that is currently under construction at the Westminster branch. Due to delays, the project was pushed back to a June 2021 opening from its original June 2020 opening date. Some of the equipment has been used in the meantime to outfit a preview makerspace so customers can begin to use some of the equipment and the library can build on our current base of users and interest new customers in using the space. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the space is only open for individual appointments, but the equipment is being well-used at this time.
Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The COVID-19 pandemic was most damaging in Maryland's rural communities, especially those on the Eastern Shore and in southern Maryland. In a response to this, three rural counties in Maryland were awarded Rural Collection Development grants with the purpose of refreshing medical, health, and workforce development collections.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) was an overarching theme for Maryland libraries. The EDI grant focussed on a collection audit and also included an analysis of policies and procedures at the library. Additional partnerships were also sought as a way of deepening community ties and providing more diverse voices in the public library. This is expected to continue to be a driving theme for Maryland libraries.
