General Information
Title: Mobile Makerspace
State Project Code: 20-LSTA-B-19
Start Date: 10/01/2020
End Date: 09/30/2021
Abstract: The Pasco County Library Cooperative created a mobile makerspace based out of a transit van that we transported to a county park in the 34610 zip code, an area that isn’t close to any existing branch libraries and that has a higher-than-average percentage of residents living below the poverty line compared to the rest of Pasco County. Within the 34610 zip code, we focused on serving a specific demographic with our weekly mobile makerspace programs –kids in grades 3-5. We had initially planned to hold these weekly programs at two partner elementary schools in the 34610 zip code, hence the grade specification. However, our plans changed as the elementary schools couldn’t host outside visitors on their campuses.

At our partner county park, the mobile makerspace programs recreated each of the existing makerspaces in our branch libraries in a mobile format, focusing on one makerspace and its activities every week during each month of programming – our test kitchen, our wood shop, our studio arts space, our recording studio, our discovery gardens  and our general technology-related offerings. After each month of mobile makerspace programming, the kids who participated self-reported their learning outcomes by taking Likert-scale surveys.Staff leading the programs also held one-on-one conversations with the kids and their guardians about their satisfaction with the programs, plus reported observational data to the grant project manager based on their experiences with the kids in the programs.

A majority of the participants reported learning something during the programs in which they participated, feeling more confident in the skills they learned, and planning to continue practicing the skills going forward when the opportunities presented themselves. Despite several changes that had be made to the original grant plans, decent numbers of participants attended each month of programming, and the Pasco County Library Cooperative is proud of the successful outcomes the participants reported. We plan to continue hosting mobile makerspace programs going forward, now around the entire county instead of concentrated in the 34610 zip code.

State Goal: Goal 2 - Strengthen Libraries: Floridians use libraries with staff, resources and facilities that transform to meet user needs.

Title: Planning, Marketing, and Hands-on Preparation
Narrative:

The grant project manager communicated with contacts at Dr. Mary Giella Elementary School and Shady Hills Elementary School to determine the details of promoting the grant programs to kids in grades 3-5. Although the schools weren't able to host the grant programs as originally planned, contacts at each school were willing and eager to promote the grant programs at the county park, located next door to one of the schools and just a few miles from the other school. Both before the grant programs kicked off in January 2021 and monthly throughout the course of the grant programs, the contacts accepted flyers advertising the mobile makerspace and its programs and distributed the flyers to teachers and students in grades 3-5. They also hung up flyers on bulletin boards at their schools.

The grant program manager met with the Pasco County Library Cooperative's Communications Team to discuss advertising the mobile makerspace and its programs. After determining that advertising specifically to those living in the 34610 zip code would be difficult to do with a press release or TV promotional spot, the grant program manager created social media posts targeted toward people living in the 34610 zip code. These posts went up both before the initial month of grant programming and at least once a month before each subsequent month of grant programming.

The grant program manager also posted flyers about the grant programs at other local parks and spread the word about the programs to other county staff members.

The grant project manager toured the available shelter at the partner county park, Crews Lake Wilderness Park, to determine where power outlets and tables were and what kind of arrangements would work for the grant programs. The grant project manager then met with the library team members who would be assisting with the initial month of mobile makerspace programming to review the plans for the programs and supplies needed. While the grant funds paid for the majority of supplies needed, the food items needed for the first month of mobile makerspace programming, which focused on cooking and baking, were paid for by Pasco County Library Cooperative's makerspace budget.

Before each subsequent month of mobile makerspace programming, the grant project manager met with the library team members who would be assisting with that month of programming to explain the mobile makerspace as a concept and the plans that had been approved for the programs that month. The grant project manager helped the team members procure and ready supplies for their month's programs.

Narrative:

This month, four weekly programs were held. The programs and summaries of them are listed below --

1. Week one: Healthy toaster-oven pizzas. This was a sixty-minute activity; while the activity was advertised, no kids showed up this first week. The plans for the activity had been to discuss the recipe and food safety guidelines for ten minutes, have the kids follow instructions to prepare the food for twenty minutes, have the kids cook their food with direction from library staff for twenty minutes overall -- discussing kitchen basics while the food cooked --, and have the kids eat their pizzas and discuss the recipe for ten minutes.

2. Week two: Microwave cookies. This was a sixty-minute activity; one family with several kids showed up this week. The kids listened to team members discuss the recipe and food safety guidelines for ten minutes, followed instructions to prepare their individual cookies for twenty minutes, microwaved their cookies with direction from team members for twenty minutes overall, and ate the cookies and discussed the recipe for ten minutes.

3. Week three: Easy, tasty soup. This was a sixty-minute activity. The recipe and food safety guidelines were discussed for ten minutes. Volunteers from the kids in attendance helped prepare, stir, and test the soup for thirty minutes. The kids ate portions of the soup and discussed potential improvements to it and the cooking process for twenty minutes.

4. Week four: Smoothies galore. This was a sixty-minute activity. The recipe and food safety guidelines were discussed for ten minutes. Volunteers from the group of kids in attendance helped measure, cut fruit for, and blend the smoothies for twenty minutes overall. The kids drank and discussed potential improvements to the smoothies and other possible uses for blenders for thirty minutes.

Title: Month 6 of Programming: June 2021: Getting Started with Musical Instruments and Audio Mixing (Led by staff from the Hudson Regional Library)
Narrative:

This month, five weekly programs were scheduled. Only four weekly programs were held, as the final week of programming, there was a bad thunderstorm that necessitated the cancellation of that week’s program. Unfortunately, because that final program was cancelled, the Likert scale surveys weren't distributed in person that final week as in other months. The grant program manager emailed the survey to guardians of participating kids to complete and send back, but only one survey was sent back. The results from that survey are listed in the outcomes section here.

The four programs that were successfully held, plus the one additional planned program, and their summaries are listed below --

1. Week one: Introduction to percussion instruments. This was a sixty-minute activity. There was a presentation about percussion instruments for twenty minutes and taking turns playing various types of these instruments – together and separately, guided by library team members – for forty minutes.

2. Week two: Introduction to woodwind and brass instruments. This was a sixty-minute activity. There was a presentation about woodwind and brass instruments for twenty minutes and taking turns playing various types of these instruments – together and separately, guided by library team members – for forty minutes.

3. Week three: Introduction to stringed instruments. This was a sixty-minute activity. There was a presentation about stringed instruments for twenty minutes and taking turns playing various types of these instruments – together and separately, guided by library team members – for forty minutes.

4. Week four: How to record songs and mix audio. This was a sixty-minute activity. There was a presentation about the recording process and mixing audio to create finished songs for twenty minutes and working on recording clips from various types of instruments – guided by library team members – for thirty minutes. At the end of the recording time, the process of beginning to mix audio was demonstrated for ten minutes.

5. Week five (Not held due to inclement weather): How to mix audio, continued. This would have been a sixty-minute activity, with the participants continuing to work on mixing audio they'd recorded the previous time. At the end of the program, the participants would have listened to the final cut of the song they'd mixed.

Title: Grant Wrap-up
Narrative:

The grant project manager worked to put together all the outcomes from the Likert scale surveys, plus the observational data collected from library team members who'd helped with various months of programming. She also compiled pictures from the programs and let contacts at Crews Lake Wilderness Park, Dr. Mary Giella Elementary School, and Shady Hills Elementary School know that the grant period was wrapping up/thanked them for partnering with the Pasco County Library Cooperative for the program space and marketing.

The grant project manager took time to create a detailed inventory of all the items that had been ordered using grant funds to assist in the completion of the final report and up-keep of the items after the end of the grant period, as the Pasco County Library Cooperative will continue to market and use the Mobile Makerspace around the county. She also showed the Mobile Makerspace and its items to all Pasco County Library Cooperative team members, as those who hadn't been involved in helping with grant programs weren't familiar with the transit van and all of the equipment and supplies it encompassed.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
According to the Likert scale survey results, the majority of participants agreed or strongly agreed that they learned something that they intended to apply and that they felt more confident about what they just learned after participating in Mobile Makerspace programs. Additionally, most participants agreed that the Mobile Makerspace programs made them more aware of resources and services provided by the library and that they were more likely to use other library resources and services after participating in Mobile Makerspace programs. Not as many participants as preferred were able to take the Likert scale surveys, both due to inclement weather the final week of June and due to participants not attending every week of programming, with the surveys only being offered the final week in order to fully measure the outcomes of the month. On the flip side, some participants only attended the final week of the month, leading to less-than-ideal survey outcomes, as they only learned one of the skills from that month’s programming and thus didn’t feel as confident and knowledgeable as they could have. However, based on observational interactions and feedback from the library team members leading each month of programming, the majority of the participants did learn something, even if they only attended one week of programs. They and their parents/guardians continually expressed gratitude and enjoyment to the library team members holding the programs, especially since the families rarely had the opportunity to attend similar programs due to the lack of a nearby library branch.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
The fact that the majority of the participants agreed or strongly agreed that they learned something that they intended to apply and that they felt more confident about what they just learned after participating in Mobile Makerspace programs is significant -- it means that the Mobile Makerspace programs carried out their goal of increasing participants' knowledge, skills, and confidence in various makerspace "disciplines"! It's important for the Pasco County Library Cooperative to note that most participants agreed that the Mobile Makerspace programs made them more likely to use other library resources and services -- this means that we need to target additional Mobile Makerspace programs, outreaches, and partnership opportunities toward kids and others living in the 34610 zip code area. Even though there's not currently a library branch nearby, the participants in the Mobile Makerspace programs there are hungry for other resources and services the library offers.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The findings and outcomes from this grant project show that a Mobile Makerspace or similar mobile project can be successful -- even amid many changed plans! With the division of types of Mobile Makerspace programs offered by month and focused lesson plans for each week of each month, the Mobile Makerspace programs were able to help the target population learn knowledge or skills that they intend to apply, according to survey results and observations. This plan provides a useful blueprint for others in the library field looking to try mobile programming or even more advanced outreaches. The main takeaway from the Mobile Makerspace project is that flexibility and trustworthy partners are key to the success of an ongoing, complex project! Being able to change some of the original plans for the Mobile Makerspace grant -- and having partners to work with in spite of these last-minute changes -- helped ensure that we were still able to reach our target audience and impact them in a positive way.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
No
Explain:

Do you anticipate changing the types of activities and objectives addressed by the project:
Yes
Explain:
The only change is that Mobile Makerspace programs will be made available for all citizens in Pasco County, not just kids in grades 3-5 living in the original targeted zip code, 34610. We will still focus particularly on reaching areas of the county where there aren't already branch libraries nearby and where there are higher numbers of people living below the poverty line, as we feel people living in those areas will derive the greatest benefit from the programs.
