General Information
Title: Sensory Inclusive Library Initiative
State Project Code: 20-LSTA-B-03
Start Date: 10/01/2019
End Date: 09/30/2021
Abstract: With the assistance of LSTA funding, the Clay County Public Library System offers a welcoming and comfortable learning environment for individuals on the autism spectrum, their families, teachers, students, and therapeutic support specialists. The Accessibility Support Collection containing books, audio, DVDs and other resources devoted to teaching social skills, behavioral therapy, conflict resolution and community awareness was developed. Sensory backpacks were purchased and made available in each library location. The backpacks contain items that will be helpful to persons experiencing sensory overload.  This allowed our library system to offer a welcoming and comfortable learning environment for individuals on the autism spectrum, their families, teachers, students and therapeutic support specialists.

State Goal: Goal 2 - Strengthen Libraries: Floridians use libraries with staff, resources and facilities that transform to meet user needs.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Each of the five library branches within the County now have dedicated spaces and special materials for persons experiencing sensory overload. Social learning tools like Physical Social Stories and Digital Social Story App were implemented to help patrons with autism prepare for a certain task or activity. Other tools like special access browsing, sensory story times, and staff training were conducted.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
One of the most significant outcomes is that the Library System added new, targeted resources for a segment of the population that was previously underserved.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Despite vendor delays, the project was still successfully implemented. This project can be implemented relatively easily and cost effectively by other public library systems seeking to serve patrons with autism.
