General Information
Title: Museum Family Adventure Pass
State Project Code: 20-04
Start Date: 07/01/2020
End Date: 08/31/2021
Abstract: Museum Family Adventure Pass is the continuation of a partnership between the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District and the DISCOVERY Children’s Museum to enrich early literacy, language, and learning activities among low-income, low-education and low English language proficiency families with young children. The project offers free entrance to the DISCOVERY Children’s museum through passes checked out at the library, and single use tickets delivered at library outreach events and through collaboration with partner organizations including the following: LVCCLD Winter Reading Challenge and Kick Off to Kindergarten, Cure 4the Kids, CASA, Andson, Las Vegas Urban League, Southern Nevada Health District, GALS charter school, Nevada PEP, Ronald McDonald House, Girls on the Run, NV 211, Office of Congresswoman Dina Titus, Spread the Word Nevada and Volunteers in Medicine. The passes are distributed in a packet that includes information on library Limitless Learning tools, along with a library card application, thus encouraging families to explore the multitude of resources available at the library. The project lays a foundation for enriching the early learning environment for working families by providing access to immersive, experiential early learning and family engagement opportunities.

State Goal: Goal 2: Encourage Nevada libraries to develop and use partnerships and collaboration to maximize user resources and services throughout the state.

Title: Instruction/Presentaton
Narrative: The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District and the DISCOVERY Children's Museum worked together to increase early literacy, learning and achievement support by expanding and targeting the existing museum pass program outreach to low-income, low education, and low English proficient family households. Individual tickets for free admission to the museum were created and distributed at library outreach events and through partner organizations.

Along with the museum tickets, each family received an application for a library card and the library's Limitless Learning flier which gives instruction on how to use the library resources available to students and families offering educational support, free access to technology, reading and research materials, homework help, tutoring, and online resources. LVCCLD Youth Services Manager Shana Harrington and Outreach Services Manager Glenda Billingsley also developed an LVCCLD early childhood development resource list and instructional materials to onboard staff at partner agencies and families on how to use library resources. Partner agencies that received instruction on library use include:
Cure 4 the Kids; CASA; Andson; Las Vegas Urban League; Southern Nevada Health District; GALS Charter School; Nevada PEP; Ronald McDonald House; Girls of the Run; NV 211; Spread the Word Nevada; and Volunteers in Medicine.

The passes  provided our customers with the opportunity to build upon the STEAM activities found at the library through a visit to the DISCOVERY Children's Museum. For some families, the museum passes are their first introduction to the library, and at the same time they have found the many other resources that the library offers.

Narrative: LVCCLD worked with the DISCOVERY Children's Museum design and marketing firm to create single use paper tickets which identified both the Nevada State Library and IMLS as the funder for the program. A total of 7,485 tickets were distributed to low-income families who would otherwise not be able to afford museum entrance. In addition, the existing passes in the library collection were refreshed and continued to be available for check out by the general public.

DISCOVERY Museum recorded data of pass usage as follows: From July 1 2020 to August 31, 2021 a total of 12,580 library delivered museum passes were redeemed for museum entrance.

Before and after maps of museum patrons locations show that the grant funded passes allowed families from urban, low income zip codes in Clark County to explore the museum for the first time. Specifically, we were able identify first time museum visits by residents living in the following zip codes: 89103, 89104,89118, 89119, 89110, 89120, 89121, 89122, 89142, 89154

While at the museum, families were able to  enjoy interactive learning experiences and learn to use tools for STEAM skill building that set them up for school readiness and success. The passes help working parents gain knowledge about parent engagement in child development through the family activities, along with the resources available to them at museums and libraries. Child-care providers are benefiting by gaining knowledge on effective child development and learning tools and early literacy.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The most significant outcome of this project was giving access to new early learning experiences at the DISCOVERY Children's Museum by allowing low-income families to visit the museum for the first time. Specifically, we were able identify first time museum visits by residents living in the following zip codes: 89103, 89104,89118, 89119, 89110, 89120, 89121, 89122, 89142, 89154. The cost of regular admission to the museum is $12.50 per person, which is out of reach for many families. By offering free admission to the museum paired with an introduction to the many library resources available to families, we have succeeded in increasing families knowledge about the benefits of rich early learning environments. Additionally, by working with multiple partners at multiple events to distribute the museum tickets, we were able to reach a much wider audience than would have been possible on our own.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
When the project began, we hypothesized that many local working families were not taking their young children to the DISCOVERY Children's museum due to the barrier of entry fees. Once our year-long data was collected of pass usage by zip code, we could be certain that the cost of attendance was indeed a major factor preventing families from accessing this early childhood learning experiences. The cost barrier highlights the importance of local libraries where entrance is free.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The most significant lesson learned for other libraries to adopt a museum pass project is the importance of establishing a strong working relationship with the museum for cross marketing and cross promotion of each others assets and resources for families. In addition, working with multiple partners in the community to distribute tickets allowed us to deliver the produce to our target audience.
