Title: Create a Teen Space within the Humboldt County Library
Narrative: Through the procurement of furniture, décor, supplies, and collection materials the Humboldt Count Library carved out a space within its walls for teenagers. This space was accessible to the public but only teenagers were granted the ability to utilize the space.  Teenagers were welcomed into the library with their space and used the given area to congregate daily with peers, work on projects, hang out, and utilize the library as a safe place to hang out after school.  They were given their freedom and privacy with the safety support of library staff nearby and enjoyed both organized programming and free range activities with access to a collection of materials to fit their educational and recreational needs.
Intent: Improve library's physical and technology infrastructure.

Title: Staff Training on serving teenage library patrons
Narrative: Staff trainings including the YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) 2020 virtual conference and A Professional Learning Bundle entitled Welcome to the Library: Teen Spaces, Staff, and Services.  Through the trainings staff learned best practices in serving teenage patrons and providing programming.  Teenagers are unique in that they are branching out into exploring their independence and value their freedom while still needing some guidance and oversight.  It can be tricky to walk that line when staff is used to providing service to either children, family, or adults.  The training helped explain and offer insight into how best to interact and approach teenage patrons to encourage their input, continue their repeated patronage to the library, and how to incorporate them into the libraries' daily service population.
Intent: Improve library's physical and technology infrastructure.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
YA circulation experienced a drop during Covid shutdowns, alongside all other collections, but has experienced a stronger comeback. In 2019 the YA circulation was 1,865 for the Humboldt County Library. 2020 saw that dip down to 916 circulated items. So far in 2021, as of September 30, YA circulation is at 1,247. The Humboldt County Library has also seen an increase in Teen Patronage to the library and participation in Teen Programming since the completion of the project. A secondary outcome was the change in staff attitudes and perception of teen patrons and services as a result of the training. As teenagers began to use the space daily and en masse, patience and tolerance for perceived teenage rebellion or rowdy behavior increased with trainings teaching staff how to best address teenagers to follow social norms within the library without alienating them into not returning.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Teenage patrons are now a major consideration when it comes to programming and collection development as a marked increase in their use of the library has been documented. Staff is well trained on effectively handling issues that arise with the addition of teenage patrons without alienating the teenagers or other patrons, making all feel welcome and included in the library services.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Build it and they will come, The teenagers do need space and programming of their own. Age 12 and under are interested in the same things, but the teenagers do not share space well with younger children and will just stop coming if other ages are allowed in their programs, turning them into just another children's program. Get feedback from your targeted age group for the types of games, decor, and style of furniture for your space.
