General Information
Title: Staff Development
State Project Code:
Start Date: 10/01/2018
End Date: 09/30/2020
Abstract: Providing opportunities for staff to pursue professional development and training that are related to their duties is vital given the current state of librarianship in the territory.  Because American Samoa's library positions are dominated by paraprofessionals, it is important to provide opportunities for training to enhance the quality of library services in the territory.  Professional Librarians also need the opportunity to maintain their skill sets through training, professional conferences, and continuing education opportunities.  We have added the Niche Academy as a resource for training and staff development.  The academy is open to patrons as well for professional development.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Staff (2) attended Podcast Movement Conference to explore the possibility of creating a podcast for the library (events, programs, services) and a maker-space in the library per popular request. Polynesian Photo Archives audio recording of cultural events is also a being considered for podcast recordings due to the Samoan culture being an oral culture. We have discovered it will take a larger commitment (staffing and training) than we are able to make last year. We will evaluate this again this year!
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Creating podcasts or maker spaces for podcasts will require staffing and training that we were not able to fund last year or prepared to offer to staff. We are optimistic about the possibility this year given added research/resources and community volunteers with expertise to help and guide.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
It is worth the effort to explore possibilities of services requested by patrons (Chamber of Commerce) in order to satisfy community desire to create and explore entrepreneurship.
