General Information
Title: Early Literacy Support Kit Collection
State Project Code: TXR-20012
Start Date: 09/01/2019
End Date: 08/31/2020
Abstract: The Sachse Public Library created a new collection of Early Literacy Support Kits that included various types of materials, including books, educational toys, games, and manipulatives. These items were selected for their ability to meet the early literacy needs of babies (ages 0-2), preschool-age children (ages 3-5), and early primary school-age children (Kindergarten-2nd grade).
Due to the pandemic, the kits were not unveiled to parents as planned. The goal for this project was to teach the importance of early literacy and give parents of children aged 0-6 additional tools and resources to help their child develop early literacy skills.

State Goal: Goal 3: Access to library services for early literacy, digital literacy, and lifelong learning

Title: Literacy kits
Narrative: Library staff assembled a total of 30 Early Literacy Support Kits.  The kits include various types of materials, including books, educational toys, games, and manipulatives. These items were selected for their ability to meet the early literacy needs of babies (ages 0-2), preschool-age children (ages 3-5), and early primary school-age children (Kindergarten-2nd grade).  Each kit was placed in a color-coded backpack which corresponds to the age-group of the intended audience.  Early Literacy Support kits for babies were placed in pink backpacks, preschool kits were placed in yellow backpacks, early primary kits were placed in blue backpacks, and bilingual kits were placed in red backpacks.

Due to concerns about the transmission of the coronavirus, the Early Literacy Support Kits were not made available to the public during the grant period, and the Library has not been able to host any in-person programs using these materials.  However, with the Dallas County Judge's recent announcement on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, which lowered the COVID-19 threat level for Dallas County, we anticipate being able to begin circulating these kits in the near future, and will host in-person programming for parents using these kits as soon as the library is able to do so safely.
Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
From the subrecipient: Due to the need to postpone our in-person open house events due to COVID-19, we do not yet have survey results by which to measure the project outcomes. We plan to introduce these open-house events as soon as we are safely able to host in-person programming, and will be able to measure the project outcomes based on the results of the survey at that time.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
From the subrecipient: Staff members have commented that they cannot wait to introduce the new Early Literacy Support Kits to the public once it is safe to do so. Despite the challenges the Library faced as a result of COVID-19, our staff have been diligent in the development of this new collection, and are eager to see the outcomes.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
From the subrecipient: Some of the toys and items we purchased ended up being a little too large for the kits and needed to be returned. These items were replaced with more compact items that were able to fit inside the backpacks. We would advise other libraries to pay close attention to the size descriptions of items they purchase for similar kits.
