General Information
Title: Rolling Library DIY - year 3
State Project Code: COP-20002
Start Date: 09/01/2019
End Date: 08/31/2020
Abstract: This collaboration between public libraries within 40 miles of the Mammen Family Public Library continued for a third year of sharing DIY materials and equipment, aka "makerspace" materials, training for library staff, programming ideas for guided DIY workshops, which progressed into more advanced, autonomous use of the equipment by community members, and a network of colleagues with whom to share expertise. The participating libraries continued to carry out their community's lifelong learning goals more effectively by providing adults and youth with increased opportunities to advance their abilities from using and tinkering to experimenting and creating in a safe environment under the supervision of technical guidance when needed.

When the pandemic forced libraries to cease programming, the libraries pivoted and began offering a limited number of classes virtually.

State Goal: Goal 1: Shared library resources

Title: DIY virtual programming
Narrative:

From the subrecipient:

Although COVID-19 shut our communities and libraries down during the summer, we all continued to do what we could.  Some were able to open their doors but none had in person programming.  Luckily, we had grant funds that allowed us to contract for online programming for cooking in addition to in-house programming.  [Fifteen classes were offered virtually which garnered 758 views.]

PHPL - All were cooking classes that focused on international cuisine and includes lessons about language, cultures customs and then cooking.  A few of the classes included Japanese culture and cuisine: gyoza; Cuban Culture & Cuisine: Plantains; French Culture and Cuisine: Crepes

NBPL - Sushi! Virtual Cooking Class, Gyoza/Japanese Dumplings! Virtual Cooking Class, and Cuban Cuisine! Virtual Cooking Class.

MFPL - We focused on cooking and sewing classes this summer. Both styles of classes worked well to teach on an online platform and both were something that our community could learn about and participate in during Covid. Some of the favorites were French Culture & Cuisine, Edible Flowers and Herbal Cocktails plus some great simple sewing projects such as dog toys, bandanas!

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
From the subrecipient: MFPL - Our community has been so supportive of us holding online classes during the pandemic. So many of them have learned new things and feel quite comfortable now on zoom and taking online courses. They have expressed that they never would have been able to not only take our classes online without so much help but they can now attend church, visit family, sadly attend funerals and overall feel so much more connected.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
MFPL - Virtual classes have increased knowledge of online learning platforms for library staff and patrons and can be used in future as alternate programming method to connect community members.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
From the subrecipient: MFPL - When programming virtually, send out supply lists of materials as early as possible if the participants are expected to cook or sew along with the teacher. We would also suggest cataloging any equipment or supplies you can and creating special cards for sharing with other libraries. Putting kits together rather than individual items is also helpful for both storing and utilizing in classes. For instance, with cooking classes, make 10 measuring and basic supplies kits. These could be shared by two participants in a class environment. This is also true for jewelry making, etc.
