General Information
Title: Pop Up Media Labs
State Project Code: 19-LSTA-B-08
Start Date: 10/01/2018
End Date: 09/30/2020
Abstract: The Palm Beach County Library System created Pop Up Media Labs in 13 branches, increasing digital literacy through access to high quality technology resources throughout Palm Beach County.  The equipment provided and housed at each branch offer opportunities for the public to create digital content, including video creation and editing, scanning images and creating podcasts. In addition, Oculus Quest headsets offer exposure to the fun and educational world of virtual reality.  The originally planned in-person media lab classes were converted to live virtual classes. Through the Zoom web conferencing program, multimedia workshops were led by knowledgeable staff, with training and one-on-one assistance available. All activities included information on the safe and responsible use of technology.

Staff underwent training through in-person workshops at the Apple Store and online through technology webinars. The initial audience for the Pop Up Media Labs was intended to be children, teens and seniors, with subsequent activities planned for all age groups. In addition to the topics already mentioned, activities focused on how to protect personal data and personal devices, copyright, and new ways of creating and sharing through digital technologies. Surveys to assess knowledge, skills and abilities of participants, designed originally for in-person classes, were converted to online survey forms shared at the live virtual events. From June to September, a total of 25 pop up media labs were offered live virtually with 81 attendees of all ages (children, teens, seniors and adults). Additionally, recordings of the live activities averaged 26 views each.  Lab activities included: Social Distancing with iPhone/iPad apps, National Camera Day (camera/photography apps), What is on the Green Screen?, Managing iPhone/Apple Device Storage and Photoshop Fantasy Art.

All adult participants who returned a survey responded that they learned new technology skills and at least two or more ways the technology can be used. Of these adults, 88% responded that they gained an increased understanding about the safe use of the technology. All attendees for children’s classes who submitted the virtual survey responded positively that they learned a new technology skill, gained an increased understanding about the safe use of the technology, and learned two or more ways the technology is used.

State Goal: Goal 2 - Strengthen Libraries: Floridians use libraries with staff, resources and facilities that transform to meet user needs.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The overall positive knowledge and skills assessment responses from attendee surveys give us a satisfactory evaluation of the lab activity curriculum. The majority (well over 75%) of survey participants responded that they learned a new technology skill, the ways a new technology is used, and safe ways to use the technology. We also learned to modify in-person labs for a virtual environment, for classes where instruction was more demonstrational in nature. One-to-one interaction was encouraged as much as possible within Zoom web programs, but much of the instruction was sharing the screen and answering questions. Verbal feedback from participants and the community has been encouraging, and there is definite interest in hands-on use of the equipment and software when that becomes possible. Offering virtual lab activities has been an effective way of alerting our service population to what they can expect of future in-person technology and media training sessions.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
We can apply our experience and testing with virtual lab activities to other types of library programs that may need to be converted to digital format. We are continuing virtual classes as a system until further notice, and different methods and venues of marketing, planning, and scheduling activities are constantly being tested.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Flexibility and crowd sourcing among staff of curriculum design is key-- regular monthly or bimonthly brainstorming training meetings helped facilitate lab activity creation. Staff training was also difficult in the beginning of the grant project while waiting for the technology equipment to be purchased and delivered, but ways around it were to utilize Apple Store's free in-store classes, as well as various online training from local and state library networks and our library system's online research tools such as Udemy.
