General Information
Title: Craft It! with STEAM: Expanding and Enhancing Creativity in the Library
State Project Code: 40-9028
Start Date: 07/01/2019
End Date: 08/31/2020
Abstract: The Sierra Madre Public Library has cultivated an engaged population of crafters through an existing program called Craft It!.  This successful monthly program utilized previously grant funded tools in their STEAM stations like a 3D printer to make earrings and a Cricut Explore Air 3 to create "papel picado" during Dia de los Muertos.  Supplies and materials for this program came primarily through donations.

With the demand from program participants and others for additional and more diverse workshops came the realization that the library needed the expertise of local artists and an infusion of materials and supplies. Through this grant the library was able to offer five new craft workshops all of which were fully subscribed and for which kits containing the necessary materials were distributed.  In addition, two sewing machines were added to the library's collection and five new sewing tutorials and take-home kits were made available.

In addition to the grant providing additional opportunities for library users to "share new experiences in the arts, sciences and technologies," a stated goal of the library, it provided an opportunity for the library to collaborate with the Creative Arts Group, a local non-profit art center.  This relationship has broadened the library's reach and connected it with local resources.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The response to this program particularly during the COVID pandemic was phenomenal. On the Saturdays that a new craft was announced, participants of all ages were lined up outside the building (socially distanced, of course) to pick up their kit. Transitioning to take and make kits and online video tutorials was challenging but successful. Participants indicated that they appreciated that the library recognized that staying safe at home was somewhat stressful and offered fun and free ways to eliminate stress.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
While the library has offered some virtual programming in the past, this was a big lift. However, it was one that the community enthusiastically embraced. Virtual programming also has the benefit of being available to those who are not able to physically get to the library. Perhaps mailing of kits to those individuals might be an option.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Our transition from in-person to virtual workshops with take and make kits resulted in an exponential increase in the amount of staff time necessary to execute the project.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
Yes
Explain:
The library will continue lending out the sewing machines and make available the tutorials.
