Start Date: 07/01/2019
End Date: 08/31/2020
Abstract: Sacramento Public Library's Early Learning Kits have made it possible for the Library to make a range of high-quality early learning tools and information available for check out and to expand their availability for parents and caregivers caring for young children. Each Early Learning kit contains an educational toy or manipulative paired with a picture book and an early learning tip sheet in English and Spanish to provide adults with ideas to support the learning. The benefit of this project was to support a child's learning in the first five years of life. Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
n/a
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
n/a
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The development of criteria for the selection of books and toys provides a useful structure for other entities that would adopt facets of the project, particularly when evaluating toys for both utility and as circulating items. The team developing the Early Learning Kits chose compatible books after the toys were selected, which more strongly connected the book content to the toy experience for the user. Finally, early learning tips provided in the tip sheets were written specifically for the experience of using each Early Learning Kit to help the user be able to more immediately utilize new early learning information with their child.

Exemplary NarrativeThese Early Learning Kits are an example of how to scale down the original Learning2Go kits and make them available as individual circulating items for the public. Additionally, the Early Learning Kits provide an exceptional pairing of toys, books, and early learning information that, particularly with the developed toy selection criteria, other library systems could easily replicate to create their own kits for circulation.
