General Information
Title: Youth Services Professional Development
State Project Code: 320
Start Date: 10/01/2018
End Date: 09/30/2020
Abstract: Each year, the Idaho Commission for Libraries’ (ICfL) Youth Services staff provide professional development opportunities for Idaho Libraries. Each fall, the ICfL supports a statewide conference for youth services library professionals. In even years, the ICfL facilitates attendance at Idaho’s Early Years Conference. In odd years, the ICfL produces its own two-day training: Read to Me Rendezvous. This year’s Rendezvous focused on diversity, early STEM, and partnerships that support school readiness. The ICfL was able to bring in public and school library staff from around the state to learn from national speakers, Idaho organizations, and share with each other.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the plan of potentially offering regional mini-trainings in the spring shifted to support libraries as they served their communities. The ICfL was able to bring in speakers from the Idaho Children’s Trust Fund to do two virtual sessions on trauma-informed libraries. The goal was to equip library staff to address the strain put on Idaho families during the statewide shutdown. Professional development efforts also shifted from providing resources and information to providing a platform for Idaho libraries to share information and tips with each other. The ICfL hosted several statewide Zoom chats covering the topics of Summer Reading, Virtual Storytimes, and Take-Home Kits. These sessions also helped library staff connect with and support each other during a difficult time.

The ICfL also continued to offer a monthly newsletter to connect Idaho libraries with youth services trends and national trainings. This year, a special edition was put out to support libraries address the COVID-19 pandemic, including resources for virtual programming. At the beginning of the reporting period, the ICfL launched the online Countdown to Coding course. This short series of online learning modules teaches library staff how to incorporate basic computer science into regular storytime or playtime. It has been well-received and librarians from all over the world have completed the course.

Title: Read to Me Rendezvous
Narrative: The objective of the 2019 Read to Me Rendezvous was “To build the capacity of public and school library staff to ensure more Idaho children are reading on grade level by third grade.”  Dr. Jamie Campbell Naidoo and Katie Sherrer presented a day-long workshop called “Digging Deep: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Idaho Libraries.” Attendees learned about creating welcoming and inclusive spaces, assessing their collections for bias, and serving Latinx and Spanish-speaking families. One library staff member commented, “the resources provided, the opportunity to dissect books, the openness of the presentation – it was very, very useful.” Over the past year, the ICfL Youth Services staff has continued to get comments on the timeliness of the information from this workshop.

The second day of the training began with an interactive presentation from the ICfL and the Idaho STEM Action Center called “Early STEM is Early Literacy.” Attendees learned about the connections between early STEM concepts and early literacy skills, and practiced ways to implement both in their libraries using techniques from the award-winning book “StoryMaking: The Maker Movement Approach to Literacy for Early Learners” by Michelle Kay Compton and Robin Chappele Thompson. Many of the attendees commented in their evaluations that this was the most useful part of the workshop.  The training continued with an overview of kindergarten readiness resources and support that the ICfL offers Idaho libraries. During the lunch hour, librarians took turns sharing successful program implementation stories. The afternoon focused on community partnerships, with speakers from the following organizations: Idaho Association for the Education of Young Children; Idaho Children’s Trust Fund; Idaho Diaper Bank; Idaho Housing and Finance Association; Idaho Maternal, Infant, and Childhood Home Visiting Program; Idaho Parents Unlimited; Idaho Public Television; Idaho Sound Beginnings; IDeal College Savings Program; Nutrition Works; Southwest District Health; Idaho State Department of Education; and the Twiga Foundation.

Library staff from 39 public libraries and nine school libraries attended Rendezvous. The ICfL reimbursed travel expenses for long-distance travelers. This ensured that staff from around Idaho could attend this professional development event. Each library in attendance was able to select a professional development book to keep. They were able to choose from the following titles: “StoryMaking: The Maker Movement Approach to Literacy for Early Learners” by Michelle Kay Compton and Robin Chappele Thompson; “Once Upon a Cuento” by Jamie Naidoo Campbell and Katie Sherrer; “Stories, Songs and Stretches” by Katie Sherrer; and “Diversity in Youth Literature” by Jamie Campbell Naidoo.

Overall the event was a success, with attendees rating the content generally high, particularly on day 2. Each day of the training had its own evaluation, which is reflected in the reporting below.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
While the ICfL's training on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the fall of 2019 was timely, there is still a need for further support in this area. Additionally, providing virtual access to professional development will continue to be a priority during the COVID-19 pandemic and as a way to reach library staff around Idaho's geographically large state.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
The focus will need to shift to supporting adult learners in a virtual environment, while meeting the needs of learners who want/need to learn in-person.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The ICfL can reach more library staff in our state by using virtual facilitation methods.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
Yes
Explain:
The ICfL staff will need support on becoming virtual facilitators.
Do you anticipate changing the types of activities and objectives addressed by the project:
Yes
Explain:
The ICfL will move some of our in-person trainings to a virtual space or provide them asynchronously online.
