Start Date: 09/01/2018
End Date: 08/31/2019
Abstract: The DeSoto Public Library offered several new programs through its “My Digital Life: Innovate, Inspire, and Impact Your Community” series. They introduced new ways for the DeSoto community to utilize library resources including creating innovative new business concepts and product prototypes. Programs also taught patrons to organize and take control of their digital lives by learning best practices for scanning, archiving, and preserving family photos. Lastly, programs helped patrons go green by eliminating clutter and learning the best methods for storing digital copies of personal, financial, medical, and other important documents.
State Goal: Goal 2: Access to resources and services to meet community and personal goals.

Title: Digitization basics for the community
Narrative: Due to staffing changes, the library was unable to implement all three parts of their proposed program. They were, however, able to implement basic programming to fulfill the Inspire and Impact portions by through the genealogy digitization classes.

The library offered a series of 3 genealogy classes which covered the principles of digitization. In addition to these three classes, library staff conducted several one-on-one consultations with library customers, whereby the fundamentals were explained.

The library also purchased one Library Document Station bundle which includes an Bookedge Scanner and computer with pre-installed scanning software, Coin & Bill Acceptor w/stand, Ecommerce software, ECS-SelfServ credit processing subscription and installation. The equipment was operational in the last month of the grant period. This will facilitate self-serve digitization services in the future.

Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:

Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:

Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
From the subrecipient: It's important that library staff be prepared to offer remedial assistance with a program such as this, as different customers have different competency levels with regard to technology. As with anything technical, there is always a learning curve and some customers are able to develop skills quicker than others. As a result, staff have found that a tailored one-on-one approach seems to work better.
